Saturday, July 26, 2003 Spangler shines in Aztec Modifieds
by Race AuthorAZTEC, N.M. -- Point leader Aaron Spangler from Dove Creek Co charged from 11th to win his 7th Barnett’s Harley Davidson dirt modified A Main at Aztec Speedway on Saturday night. Spangler again had to hold off a furious challenge from point runnerup Craig Nelson as Nelson battled his way forward from 23rd starting position after barely qualifying for the 30 lap A Main with his 7th place B Main finish. James Tabet also made a lot of passes with his new car as he raced from 18th starting to finish third. Jesse Baldwin got an opportunity to drive the C Nelson backup car and he ran a solid fifth after earlier winning his heat race. IMCA Stock Car point leader Allen Bradley was forced to race the B Main. He won that to earn 17th starting spot for the 24 car, 25 lap A Main and he made his winning pass on the final round to secure that victory also. John Hank just missed a second straight win with his MoPar as he ran second ahead of Scotty Beasley. David Benson won his second straight mini stock main event with point leader Steven McDaniel finishing 2nd for a third straight week. McDaniel had to come from 14th this week as winner Benson lined up 7th. The hobby stock field was down to 9 cars, but heat winner Jeff Jennings came from 8th to win with 9th starter Bobby Simons finishing second ahead of point leader Howard Asbe.
The dirt modifieds had a 33 car turnout including usual Albuquerque racers Richard Johnson, Eric Alwin and Mark Siefried. The four heat races transferred the top four into the 30 lap A Main and the final 8 starters were determined in the 17 car B Main. Baldwin beat Eddie Farley in heat 1, J J Harpole returned to action with a win in heat 2 over Spangler and Tim Karl beat Garrett Higgins in heat 3. Higgins is driving a second Burson team car. Jeff Davis won heat 4 over young Porter Smith. The highly competitive B Main went to Dean Brown ahead of Tabet, Ken Ward, M E Eddleman, Richard Johnson, Derek Neil and C Nelson. Four of these B Main transfers came from deep in the lineup to take top 9 finishing spots in the 30 lapper. Spangler won from 11th with 23rd starter C Nelson second ahead of 18th starter Tabet. Eddie Farley and Baldwin ran 4-5 after starting 9th and 8th. Neil came from 22nd to place sixth ahead of third starter Lee Moss, Dulane Colcleasure and Johnson. Colcleasure had run the Colorado Dirt Magazine $10,000 to win show in Fort Morgan CO the previous weekend.
The IMCA Stock Cars fielded 34 entries and used the same format as the dirt modifieds. Newcomer Patrick Smith won heat 1 over early season point leader Tim Hopper. Allen Anderson beat Hank and Beasley in heat 2 and Richard Trujillo won heat 3 ahead of Rex Higgins. Michael Farley beat Andy Goodenough in heat 4. A Bradley missed the transfer out of his heat, but won an 18 car B Main over Bill Cochran, Larry Bradley, Sean Duff and Ted Boettler. That lined A Bradley up 17th for the 24 car, 25 lap A Main and he passed 4th starter Hank on the last lap to win. Beasley and Trujillo also led laps in the race and Beasley ran third ahead of Trujillo, 16th starter Daniel Christensen, Melissa Farley, Hopper and Andy Hockenhull.
The mini stock count grew to 14 cars and Nick Nelson beat Zeke Sivers in heat 1. Benson had a perfect night as he won heat 2 over Gary Linker. Benson won the feature from 7th while point leader McDaniel came from 14th to place 2nd ahead of 11th starter Chris Lee and T J Morrow. Amanda Auckland, Z Sivers, Dian Sivers and Matthew Higgins rounded out the top 8. H Asbe won the first hobby stock heat race ahead of Leroy Barnhouse and Jennings beat Dereck Rhoden in the second. The top three feature finishers started in the back three spots as 8th starter Jennings, beat 9th starter Bobby Simons and 7th starter H Asbe. Ed Mangum, Randy Lutz and Rusty Estes rounded out the top six.
