NORTH PLATTE, Neb. -- Mother Nature dropped some sprinkles before the races started at Lincoln County Raceway on July 17. She moved the rain out of the area so the fans could be treated to the make-up A Features from June 15 and the regular show for the night. Andrew Dillenburg, Jay Steffens, Luke Warmwater, Buddy Brown, Todd Chrisman, Charlie Morland, and Jeremy Herbst from North Platte, along with Gary Long of Valentine all made up for lost time with the previous rainouts, and took home the A Feature wins.

The IMCA Modified make-up main event was marred by an accident that found North Platte drivers Brad Turner, Tony Schultz, and Troy Bayne all taken out in a wild wreck that sent Turner’s car nose first hard into the wall and Schult’z car into and onto the wall that comes out of corner four. No drivers were injured, but the cars were finished for the night. Andrew Dillenburg took the lead on lap two of the race and was never fronted in his commanding win. Chuck Stryker of Eddyville, who says Lincoln County Raceway is a track he needs to improve on, started on row five and found his way to second place at the end. He was followed by Dan Carl and Kenny McCarty of North Platte, as well as Don Hagan, Jr. of Culbertson.

The second A Feature had T. J. Cohn of North Platte commanding the first twelve laps of the race, only to be overtaken by Jay Steffens and McCarty. Steffens took the lead on the next lap, only to have the wily McCarty sneak underneath him to command the top honor. Undaunted, Steffens held his line, took the lead back, and drove off with the win. Andrew Dillenburg completed his best ever racing night getting by McCarty late and finishing in second place. Dan Carl and T. J. Cohn completed the top five finishers. Stryker, Cohn, and McCarty won the night’s IMCA Modified heat races.

The first IMCA Stock Car A Feature was a shining event, with only one caution period slowing the action. Buddy Brown took the lead from Richie Wickizer of Culbertson at the half way point and appeared to have a comfortable win. Brother Charley from Maxwell had other intentions and caught Buddy with a couple of laps to go. The two showed each other no brotherly love, but gave the fans a thrill. Buddy hit his marks and held his line to take the win. Brady Koch of Cambridge finished in third spot, followed by Todd Chrisman and Bryan Hagan of Culbertson.

Richie Wickizer won his heat race, and again paced the early laps of a feature in the second event. Heat winner Todd Chrisman was a man on a mission, coming from the fifth row to take the lead from Wickizer near the half way point. Shane Stout of North Platte, fresh off from his first ever IMCA Stock Car A Feature win the night before in Culbertson, made a late charge to try and get his second win in as many nights. However, Chrisman was the man for the win in this race. Stout was followed by Wickizer, Bryan Hagan, and Brad Kohler of North Platte. Charley Brown won the other heat race for the division.

Gary Herbst of North Platte paced the early laps of the IMCA Late Model early A Feature. Luke Warmwater (Kenny McCarty’s alter ego), added more hot to his race and took the lead from Herbst on lap nine after many laps of Herbst being able to hold him off. Herbst faded near the end, and Ron Lee of Valentine moved his way towards the front. He caught Warmwater, but did not get the job done. Shane Lewis of North Platte finished in third place, followed by Ogallala driver Luke Frosh and Valentine driver Tyler Reagle.

The second feature saw another Gary out front, but this time, it was Gary Long. The Late Models had some difficulty getting the race started, but once they did, Long was out front. The field was kept close early because of the cautions, and Long stayed in sight of the rest of the field, most notable heat winner Shane Lewis. After one restart, Lewis was able to get the nose of his car under the car of Long. That was the wakeup call for Gary, as he gave it a little more hit, held his groove nicely, and pulled away with his grin and the win. Lewis kept Tyler Reagle in third place at the finish, while Ron Lee and Gary Herbst rounded out the top five. Luke Frosh won the other Late Model heat race.

The Classic Modifieds only had one A Feature for the night, and it was a good thing for some drivers. Early in the race, Kurt Morland, Matt Fletcher, and Matt Caudillo, all of North Platte, tangled in corner four. The Matt’s both saw their cars towed to the pits, but the drivers were uninjured. Eric Piquet of North Platte had some hopes for winning his first ever A Feature while leading the field in the opening laps of the event. Charlie Morland charged from his third row starting spot to take the lead from him and stayed out ahead of the field for the win. Karl Wickizer of Palisade finished in second place. Piquet spun on the last lap while running in third place and dropped well out of the top five and moving Larry Pollmann of McCook to that spot. Pollmann was followed by Jeremy Halouska of North Platte and Duke Ebert of Culbertson. Morland and Pollmann were also heat race winners.

Jeremy Herbst rolled his Mini-Sprint in his heat race early in the night, then rolled to the A Feature win later in the night. With a borrowed wing, he started from row six and took the lead from Josh Sabin of North Platte before the half way lap. Sabin had one of his best ever runs, and was able to hold off sixth row starter Jamey Kennicutt of Gothenburg for second place. They were followed by heat winner Arden Myers of McCook and Toph Harmon of Cambridge. Meddie Cote of Cozad took the other heat win.

The next night of racing at Lincoln County Raceway will be Saturday night, July 24. The gates open at 5 P.M., and the races start at 7 P. M., C.D.T.
