Sunday, June 24, 2012 Morton Victorious in Canadian American Shootout 125

KALISPELL, Montana -- Rain delayed the running of the Canadian American Shootout 125 to Sunday afternoon. Super Late Model drivers tuned their cars for the final time before the Coors Light Montana 200. A near capacity crowd cheered the drivers along during the warm afternoon. NAPA Auto Parts and Twisted tea presented the racing action.
Chris Warburton qualified fastest in the Flathead Beacon Bomber division. Josh Norris took advantage from a late race mistake by Bill McCallum to claim his first trophy dash win of the season. McCallum fought hard in the heat race and came out on top. Norris lost a rear wheel in the heat race ending his afternoon of racing. In the main event McCallum and Warburton battled during the middle of the 20 lap main. In the end Warburton rolled into victory lane. McCallum came into the weekend leading the series. Warburton comes out of the weekend in first, with three points separating the two.
Dustin Martel set fast time for the Don K Hobby’s. Cole Linn fought off Steve Hrisook to claim the trophy dash win. Dustin Martel captured the Heat race for the event. In the Main event Ed Linn lead the main early after starting fourth. Casey Brandt marched to the front of the 30 lap main and took first place for Linn. Linn and Rick Mitchell collided late in the race causing each to go to the back of the pack. Brandt motored to his first Hobby Stock main event win of the season. Martel continues to lead the Hobbys Stock points by one point over Marvin Stone.
The Kalispell Toyota Super Late Models ran their last event before the 22nd running of the Coors Light Montana 200. Trevor Emond started the night off by setting fast time. Don Staggs took the first of two dashes for the evening. Agni Howell, who is running in support of Lisa’s Voice and the Oral Cancer Foundation, claimed the second trophy dash win. Ryan Wells and Bodie Morton each claimed the Heat races. The 125 lap Canadian American Shoot out 125 was full of hard packed racing action. Chris Skelton and Braedon Havens started on the front row. David Garber moved to second and challenged Skelton for 18 laps. Garber passed Skelton for the lead on lap 19 and the two battled back and forth for another 20 plus laps. Bodie Morton overtook Skelton and claimed second place on lap 65. Corey Wolfe, Alex Lessor, and Skelton all fought for third place. With 25 laps to go David Garber’s throttle stuck open causing him to slam into the turn three retaining wall. Thanks to his Hans Safety device Garber emerged from the car shaken, but unhurt. A very excited Morton finished the 125 laps in first place, followed by Wolfe in second, and Skelton in third. Morton was very impressed with his car at the end of the main and looks to roll into the Montana 200. Morton comes out of the weekend on top of the division points series with a ten point advantage over Alex Lessor.
