Tuesday, June 21, 2005 Adams wins Late Model feature at 201
by Race AuthorSITKA, Ky. -- After a week off, dirt track racing action heated up Sat. Night in front of another great crowd of fans with drivers racing in seven divisions. More red clay has been hauled to the track, with more to be trucked in this week. When night fell on the racetrack, added lighting in the turns brightened the view of fans lining the main grandstand seating, as well as the open hill side area, giving fans a clearer view of some of the most competitive wheel to wheel racing action through out heat races, which set the field for features in seven classes.
Isom Late Model driver, Anthony Adams and Hazzard’s Steve Stollings paced the Late model field to the green flag. Adams would pull his #8 Rayburn chassis to the bottom of the 1st set of turns, taking a two car length advantage off the 2nd turn, in front of an early side by side battle between Stollings and West Liberty’s Daniel Williams. Off the 4th turn, the 1st time to the start finish line they would stack up three wide with the #87 of St Albans West Virginia’s David Smith racing the outside line, Williams in the center groove and the #10 of Prestonsburg’s Paul Harris holding it right to the bottom of the track. Harris and Williams made slight contact just past the back pit entrance, then Daniel’s ride pushed at the entrance of turn three, putting him back to 5th with Smith and Harris 3rd and 4th behind Adams and Stollings. By the 5th lap, Adams extended his advantage to four or five car lengths, with the best race on the track between two veterans Paul Harris and Three time champion, David Powers of Salyersville. After racing through the corners wheel to wheel for several laps, Harris found a lane around Paul on the 13th lap. On the final re-start with seven laps remaining, Smith dove under the #17 of Stollings, bringing the #10 of Harris with him, and Steve into the clutches of Powers. Harris looked to set his car up to the outside of turns one and two, but his car pushed up the hill with a handful of laps to go, causing him to loose ground to 2nd place Smith, but Paul gathered it back in, finding the back bumper of Smith with 5 to go. Harris built up a run into the 4th turn, and ended up causing the #87 of Smith to go around, and sending the Floyd county driver to the rear of the field with only a handful of laps to go. Smith tried to get under the leader, Adams, but Anthony used a good run off the 2nd turn and once again pulled away, extended his lead back to four or five car lengths With two to go, the closest race again involved the #97 of Powers and Steve Stollings . David looked to find a line to the outside of Steve. On the final lap, Adams continued to pull away from the field to record his 1st feature win of the season for the Isom Ky Late Model racer, driving the “Phillip Hall Trucking”, CJ Rayburn Grand Prix.. St. Alban’s West Virginia’s David Smith raced across the stripe as the runner up in front of Steve Stollings who held off David Powers, after David ended up in the backend of Paul Harris who had slowed in front of the flag stand, as the leaders were in turns three and four. 16 year old, Eric Wells of Hazzard rounded out the top five.
Prestonsburg’s Clint Shutts and Salt Rock West Virginia’s Mickey Sanson brought the open wheel modifieds to the green flag, with the two side by side through the 1st two turns, but Shutts found a good run off the 4th turn and took the lead. With Shutts pulling away to a good lead the race in the early laps would be between Sanson, and the #82 of Randy Fouts, challenging to the inside. Randy found an opening in the center of turn two on the 3rd lap. By the 4th lap, Defending champion, Tim Moore of Logan West Virginia, who had started on the tail of the feature, had battled up to the 3rd spot. Moore got around Fouts on the next lap, and held on to the checkers. At the finish line it would be the #135, L & T Racing Engine Powered, lightning chassis of Prestonsburg’s Clint Shutts in his Carolina Construction” “High Tech Signs and Graphics sponsored car, beating defending champion, Tim Moore , Randy Fouts, and Arlie Daniels to the open wheel checkers.

Last year’s Bomber champion, Michael Paul Howard, had not raced a Bomber this season until Sat. night, when Don Risner of Salyersville put the Limited Late Model driver in the seat of his #R17. Howard had recently sold his Limited Late, and led every lap of the Claim Bomber feature in the “Don’s Super Lube, “Anaconda Drilling”, sponsored Monte Carlo. Two time winner, Pete Castle who signed a contract with Simpson Race Products, finished 2nd in front of Erwin Blair, making his 1st run of the 05 season in Charles Blair’s #T1. Flat Gap’s Dean Pennington, and Lee Ross rounded out the top five.
