Saturday, May 12, 2012 Clifford Wagers Holds off Late Challenge to Win Burning Rubber Radio Mini-Stock Main Event
by John PottsCORBIN, Ky. -- Leading all the way, Clifford Wagers of Barbourville picked up his second feature trophy of the year in the Burning Rubber Radio Mini-Stock Series at Corbin Speedway on Saturday evening, May 12.
Wagers had built up a lead of 3.52 seconds by the fifth lap of the 15-lap main event, and it was at that point Jeff Chumley of Keavy took over second place and began to chase down the leader.
Chumley had started at the tail as the most recent feature winner.
With four laps left, Chumley was right on Wagers’ rear bumper, and spent the next three trips around trying to find an opening on the inside of the Wagers Auto Parts Escort.
Wagers kept the challenger behind him, however, and on the final lap Chumley decided to take his Reelz Video & Tanning Sentra around the outside.
Coming off the fourth turn, he was able to get alongside, but Wagers went under the checkered flag a half-car length ahead in one of the closest finishes at Corbin this season.
Joseph Knuckles was third driving the Everyone Rides Auto Sales Integra, with Harold Brown fourth in his J&P Automotive Sunfire, and Brittany Brown of Corbin taking fifth with the Performance Diesel Tech Saturn.
Chumley posted the fastest time in qualifications with a 15.924 clocking, while Wagers won the trophy dash.
