Whip City Speedway
Saturday, June 27, 2009 King Reigns Supreme at Whip City Speedway
by Mark McKeonWESTFIELD, Mass. -- Mike King won his first 750cc Mini Sprint feature of the year at Whip City Speedway on Saturday night; in fact it was the first feature win in nearly three years for the20Agawam High School student.
“We made some changes to the car just before we went out for the feature and they helped a lot,” King said. “The car was not only fast, but it was handling great too.”
It was a wire to wire victory for King, who started on the outside pole and survived a single caution flag on his way to Victory Lane.
In only his third start in a 1200cc Mini Sprint, Anthony Nocella picked up a win to add to the two wins he has this season in his 600cc Mini Sprint.
Nocella is a busy young man, racing 600cc and 1200cc Mini Sprints at The Whip and piloting Bobby Seymour’s Midget on the NEMA Lites tour.
Brian Boudreau became the first driver to put four notches on his six gun this season with a victory in the 270cc Mini Sprint feature. Boudreau started 9th and took the lead on lap 12.
Putting the disappointments of a challenging season behind her, Bethany Viets won the Quad 4 Midget feature. Former Indy 500 Rookie of the Year Denny Zimmerman was on hand in Victory Lane to add his congratulations.
Rookie Tyler Jackson picked up his third 750 Sportsman win of the season with a last lap pass on Shelby Klekotka, who had led from the start. Klekotka came away with a career best runner-up finish.
Rich Crooker extended his 600cc Mini Sprint points lead with his second victory of the season.
Last season, Brian Peterson finished second in Modified Lite points, but this season he’s only competed twice. He defeated an 11 car field this week, taking the lead with 4 laps to go.
Whip City Speedway will be closed on July 4 so that our competitors can spend time celebrating Independence Day with their families. We’ll get back to action on Saturday July 11 with an afternoon program of Kart racing and an evening program of Mini Sprints, Midgets and Modified Lites.
