Friday, July 31, 2009 Army National Guard Race Night at Central Missouri Speedway on Week 15
by Alan MillerWARRENSBURG, Mo. -- Warrensburg's own Central Missouri Speedway along with the Army National Guard from Whiteman AFB will entertain the race fans during week No. 15 in the championship season this Saturday night featuring the Modified, Late Model, Street Stock, and B-Modified drivers competing for the season championships. Army National Guard race night will be a special event with several opportunities to see military equipment on display and a chance to talk with area Guard personnel. The action gets under way with pit gates opening at 4:30 p.m. and the admission gates at 5, following with the drivers' meeting at 6:30, hot laps at 7, and racing starting on the track at 7:30.
Dustin Boney, Brad Smith and Brian Johnson visited victory lane celebrating their repeat feature wins with Boney becoming the first driver gaining three feature victories in the highly competitive modified class. Smith, in the B-Modified division, garnered his sixth feature win of the year at CMS and Johnson raced his street stock into his seventh feature triumph this year. In the ULMA Late Model class, Bob King captured the checkers for the first time this season after an exciting last lap victory to become the tenth different driver to enter victory lane in ten late model features. The victory was an exceptional win for King after being involved in a serious auto accident earlier this year.
Drivers continue to advance in the point’s championship run for the top spot in each division. The ‘mighty’ Modifieds are led by Orrick driver, Aaron Marrant with Dean Wille from Warrensburg in the second spot after his sixth top-five finish last weekend. Wille moved up into the second position last week after his consistent top-five finishes over the last few months of racing. Concordia drivers, Dave Meyer and Jason Thompson occupy the third and fourth positions with feature win credits on their 2009 race resumes. Marrant is a two-time track champion in the modified division and barring any late season problems in the toughest division at CMS, he will have a good chance to gain another crown while competing with the best drivers from around the Missouri Kansas region.
The tightest battle for points right now is in the ULMA Late Model division with Randy Ainsworth from Excelsior Springs moving into the lead after a feature win two weeks ago and a hard fought second place finish last weekend. Ainsworth, a previous I-70 Speedway track champion in asphalt modifieds is just two points ahead of Warrensburg driver, Jon Binning who was the 2008 CMS ULMA late model point’s champion. Steve Clancy continues to hang close in third with six consistent runs in the top-five despite some mid-season mechanical problems with his car.
The Street Stock drivers are not making it easy for Brian Johnson from Independence in this division. Michael Mullins from Kingsville driving for Steve and Julie Hisle is just 40 points behind Johnson in second. Mullins has nine top-five finishes in the race for the top spot. Any slip by Johnson in the weekly quest for the championship could tighten up the division race in an instant. Nic Bennet, the 2008 CMS Street Stock champion also lies in wait in the third spot with nine top-five finishes.
The B-Modified division features a long list of talented young drivers with Jacob Ebert from Oak Grove leading the pack. The smooth driver from Bonner Springs, Kansas, Ethan Isaacs is heating up the competition on the track this season with only 40 points separating him and Ebert. Isaacs built his car as a senior project this year and has taken good care of his equipment throughout the season to stay in the hunt. Michael King also continues to keep pressure on the leaders in the third spot with four top-five finishes this season.
All four divisions will be on hand to again to race their way to victory lane celebrations this Saturday night. CMS is located just 4 miles north of Warrensburg on Hwy 13 or you can take the I-70 Higginsville exit and drive about 12 miles south on Hwy 13 with the track located on the left side of the highway heading south.
