Friday, June 17, 2011 Nottestad Holds off Broughton to Win Late Model Feature Wilberg, Stark and Jones Also Win

OREGON, Wis. -- It was a beautiful night for racing at Madison International Speedway and the fans were treated to an awesome night of racing excitement as part of Bike Night presented by Big Oldies 93.7 and Fast Signs. Dale Nottestad (Rockweiler Insulation Late Models), Bobby Wilberg (Area Sportsman), Kyle Stark (Roto Rooter Bandits), and Andy Jones (Pellitteri Waste Systems Legends) took home the checkered flags.
Dale Nottestad Notches a Win in Late Model Thriller
Dale Nottestad picked up his first win of the 2011 season by edging Scott Broughton in the 40 lap feature for the Rockweiler Insulation Late Models.
Kevin Knuese and Dale Nottestad had the honors of ushering the twenty-two car field of Rockweiler Insulation Late Models to the green flag in their 40 lap feature.
Nottestad would grab the early lead over Knuese with Broughton sliding into second on lap 2. Ryan Goldade would pass Knuese on lap 3 with Wilberg doing the same one lap later.
Nottestad, Broughton, and Goldade put some distance between themselves and the field as the event remained under green until lap 23 when two cars tangled on the front stretch bringing out the yellow flag.
Now it was time for real drama to begin as the cone made its first appearance of the night. The front runners would all choose the inside while Bobby Wilberg would make the move to the outside of row two. Jeremy Miller, who has benefited from his choices the past two races, would opt to stay on the inside and restart in the fifth row.
On the restart the inside row was dialed in as Nottestad, Broughton, and Goldade took the top three spots and stayed that way for one more lap before the caution came out for a melee in turn four.
So here it came again. The cone. This time Wilberg and Miller moved to the outside but nobody would have enough to catch Nottestad who quickly built up a big lead over Broughton. The battle was taking place behind the pair out front with Goldade, Zack Riddle, Miller, and Wilberg fighting for position.
But Broughton was not about to throw in the towel as he closed the gap with each passing lap. On lap 38 Broughton appeared to be ready to make his move for the lead coming out of turn four but came up short. He would have one last chance.
On the final lap Broughton pulled to the inside of Nottestad going into turn three but wouldn’t quite have enough to get to the front as Nottestad would take the win by half a car length. Goldade would finish in third with Riddle and Miller rounding out the top five.
“We didn’t really want to see the cautions late in the race, but we did well on the restarts and were running great on green,” said Nottestad in a post race interview with Matt Panure.
Zack Riddle was fast qualifier with a lap of 19.071. Heat wins went to Scott McGettigan, Ed Szelagowski Jr., and Casey Johnson.
Miller leads the point standings with 300 followed by Broughton (280), Nottestad (267), Riddle (257), and Wilberg (245).

Wilberg Returns to Victory Lane
Different car…same results. Driving TJ Goldade’s Camaro, Bobby Wilberg returned to victory lane in the Ho Chunk Gaming Area Sportsman by winning their 20 lap feature.
Thirteen cars took the green flag in the Ho Chunk Gaming Area Sportsman feature with Greg Baxter and Russ Nicholson showing the way. Baxter and Nicholson would run side by side with Austin Nason and Shaun Scheel in hot pursuit. On lap 3 Baxter would clear Nicholson with Scheel up to second and looking for more. On lap 5 Scheel would nudge his way by Baxter coming out of turn four before the caution flag came out for an incident in turn one.
On the restart Bobby Wilberg would move to the outside of row two next to Matt Lundberg. Wilberg would be up for the challenge as he ran side by side with Scheel for a lap before taking over the top spot on lap 7. The caution came out a lap later when Lundberg and Austin Nason got together on the backstretch.
Wilberg maintained his lead over the field with Robert Hanseberry Jr. up to second followed by Shaun Scheel, Baxter, and Chester Ace. On lap 10 Stephen Scheel would overtake Baxter for fifth.
Despite another caution, Wilberg was still able to wheel his way to victory lane by ten car lengths.. Hansberry Jr. would finish second followed by Shaun Scheel, Stephen Scheel, and Mike Taylor.
“This was a great night and a lot of fun,” said Wilberg who presented his trophy to a young fan.
Wilberg was the fastest in qualifying with a lap of 20.826 while Russ Nicholson and Stephen Scheel won the six lap heat races.
Hansberry Jr. leads the points chase with 316 followed by Shaun Scheel (257), Stephen Scheel (251), Mike Taylor (250), and Goldade / Wilberg (249).

Stark Stars in Bandits
Kyle Stark won for the second time in 2011 by topping the seventeen car field in the Roto Rooter Bandits feature.
Ed Klug and Steve Dickson led the field of seventeen Roto Rooter Bandits to the inaugural green flag in their 20 lap feature. Dickson took the lead on the first lap followed closely by John Beale. On the second lap Beale pulled alongside Dickson and made the pass for the lead coming out of turn two. The first caution of the event came out on lap 4 for a spin on the backstretch.
Following the restart, Beale would continue to show the way followed by Dickson, Lee Haag, and Davy Pennell. Beale put some real estate between himself and the field increasing his lead to ten car lengths by lap 6. On lap 7 both Ace and Kyle Stark were able to power their way past Dickson for second and third respectively. One lap later the caution flag came out again and took away Beale’s sizeable advantage.
Beale would maintain his lead after the restart holding off the hard charging Stark and Ace. On lap 11 Stark dropped to the lowside coming out of turn four to take the lead. One lap later the caution would come out again for a spinning car.
Stark, Beale, and Ace would continue their chase at the front of the pack when the race went green again. Even though they needed to work through lapped traffic, Stark would lead the rest of the way to pick up the victory. Beale would hold off Ace to finish second with Lee Haag and Davy Pennell rounding out the top five.
“It feels pretty good to be back in victory lane,” said Stark. He is teaming with Jim Lorang for points this year, but his points from this event were applied only to him since Lorang was also in the race earning points for the team.
Ace set fast time with a lap of 15.379 with heat wins going to Dan Snyder, Davy Pennell, and John Beale.
The team of Lorang / Stark lead the point race with 277 followed by Ace (275), Lee Haag (264), Jason Coker (262), and Team Dixon (211).

Jones Works His Way Through the Field to Win Legends Main Event
Andy Jones won for the second straight week by making a late race pass to take the checkered flag back to Illinois.
Steve Narr and Jeff Lechnir brought the field of sixteen Pellitteri Waste Systems Legends to the green flag in their 20 lap feature. Narr would grab the early lead with Tim Narr up to second on lap 2. The first caution flag came out on lap 3 when two cars tangled in turn 3. Fast qualifier Max McNamara also experienced mechanical problems and was forced to retire to the pits.
The Narr boys continued to lead after the green flag waved again with Kevin Griffin in third followed by Rachael Pinkerman. Steve Narr quickly built a sizeable lead of ten car lengths over Tim Narr. On lap 11 Griffin moved past Tim Narr for second followed by Cory Talaska and Andy Jones with Steve Narr coasting out front.
The last thing Steve Narr wanted to see happen to his big lead was the caution flag to come out… and it did on lap 13.
Narr continued to lead after the race went green again, but Talaska had something to say about it on lap 15 when he slid by on the inside coming out of turn four to take the point closely followed by Griffin and Jones just before the caution flag came out again for a spin.
On lap 16 Jones powered to the inside of Griffin to take over the second position and set his sights on Talaska. On lap 19 Jones made his move to the inside of Talaska to take the lead and the checkered flag. Talaska would finish in the runner-up spot followed by Griffin, Rodney Mundt, and Tommy Jones.
It was back to back wins for Jones who started fifteenth in the field. “It was pretty tight out there, but it was fun working up through the field,” said Jones from Buckshot Exteriors Victory Lane.
McNamara turned the fastest lap in qualifying at 14.531 and heat victories went to Kyle Vergata and McNamara.
Jones leads the point standings with 307 followed by Talaska (263) and Vince Bartolotta (241).
