Wilberg Edges Riddle to Take Home Late Model Checkered Flag; Scheel, Jones, and Stark Also Victorious

by John Wells

OREGON, Wis. -- Bobby Wilberg (Rockweiler Insulation Late Models), Stephen Scheel (Ho Chunk Gaming Area Sportsman), Andy Jones (Pellitteri Waste Systems), and Kyle Stark (Roto Rooter Bandits) took home the checkered flags tonight at Madison International Speedway.

Late Model Checkered Flag Goes to Bobby Wilberg

Bobby Wilberg picked up his first feature win of the season in the Rockweiler Insulation Late Models by topping the nineteen car field in their 40 lap event.

Nate Oppliger and Ty Majeski brought the field to the green flag with Oppliger grabbing the point for the first lap before being overtaken by Dale Nottestad on lap 2.

With Nottestad running out front and building a multi-car advantage over the rest of the field, Zack Riddle would pass Oppliger for second on lap 5. One lap later Ryan Goldade and Wilberg would power their way to third and fourth respectively.

Goldade would get past Riddle for second on lap 8, Wilberg appeared to have the most speed as he vaulted by both to take the second position behind Nottestad on lap 9.

Nottestad would continue to lead until the caution flag came out on lap 19 for a car into the wall in turn three.

The restart would find the cars of Nottestad, Wilberg, and Goldade electing to stay on the inside while Riddle chose to move up to the front via the outside groove. Riddle and Nottestad would run side by side when the race returned to green with Riddle holding a slight lead on lap 20 before Nottestad regained the advantage one lap later.

On lap 22, Wilberg would move past Riddle for second. Nottestad would continue to run out front with Wilberg now in hot pursuit. On lap 24 the two would drift up the track coming out of turn three opening the door for Riddle who would become the new leader.

A caution on lap 26 involving Goldade and Nottestad would send both drivers to the back of the field.

The restart would find Riddle, Wilberg, and Scott Broughton choosing the inside with Majeski going to the outside. After the green flag came out again, Riddle would be able to maintain the lead followed by Wilberg and Majeski. Dann Barber would make the most of the restart moving up to fourth followed by Broughton.

Wilberg would continue to hunt down Riddle waiting for the right opportunity. On lap 32 he looked to the inside of Riddle going into three only to come up short. This scenario would play out for four more laps before Wilberg would be able to move to the inside coming out of turn 3 and take over the lead coming out of turn four.

Riddle would make every effort to regain the lead, but would be unable to do so as Wilberg raced his way to victory lane. Ty Majeski and Dann Barber would finish third and fourth, best ever finishes for them at MIS, with Broughton finishing fifth.

“It was a good race and we’re glad to be back in victory lane,” said Wilberg.

Heat races were won by Scott Broughton, Chad Stevens, and Bobby Wilberg. Jeremy Miller set fast time with a lap of 19.020 (94.637 mph).

Miller leads the point standings with 584, followed by Broughton (534), Wilberg (526), Nottestad (522), and Riddle (501).

Stephen Scheel Seals the Deal in Area Sportsman

Stephen Scheel became the first repeat winner in the 2011 racing season in the Ho Chunk Gaming Area Sportsman by claiming the checkered flag in the 20 lap feature.

Greg Baxter and Chester Ace paced the field of eleven to the green flag only to see the caution flag wave immediately for an incident in turn one.

On the restart Baxter and Matt Lundberg would battle it out for the lead with Lundberg showing the way after lap one and Baxter taking back the top spot on lap 3. Lundberg would regain the lead on lap four before Scheel would slide by both drivers on lap 5 while coming out of turn four.

Scheel would be able to build a lead over the field until the second caution of the race came out when the car of Bobby Wilberg made contact with the wall on the backstretch.

When the green was displayed again it would still be Scheel in the lead followed by Robert Hansberry Jr., Austin Nason, and Shaun Scheel. It appeared that Hansberry Jr. might have enough to overtake Scheel, but the Lake Mills driver would adeptly handle his El Camino the rest of the way to earn the checkered flag. Hansberry Jr. would finish second followed by Nason, Shaun Scheel, and Lundberg.

“It’s great to be back in victory lane,” said Scheel.

Heat races were won by Greg Baxter and Shaun Scheel. The fastest qualifier was Hansberry Jr. with a lap of 20.684 (87.024 mph).

Hansberry Jr. leads the points chase with 605 followed by Stephen Scheel (546), Nason (520), Shaun Scheel (490), and Lundberg (485).

Jones Holds Off Moyer to Take Legends Checkered Flag

Andy Jones outbattled Aaron Moyer to win the 20 lap feature for the Pellitteri Waste Systems Legends.

Kyle Jusits and Vince Bartolotta brought the field to the green flag with Bartolotta taking the lead. Cory Talaska would move into the second position on lap 2 with Jones close behind in third.

On lap 6 Jones would find the room he needed to get to the lead on the inside of Bartolotta while coming out of turn four. The first caution of the race came out on lap 12 for a spinning car in turn three.

The restart would find Jones and Moyer battling it out for the lead. Jones would hold the point until Moyer found his way to the lead on lap 17. From there the two would race side by side with Moyer holding a slight advantage. That is until the final lap.

With lapped traffic ahead, Moyer got loose coming out of turn four giving Jones the room he needed to get by and take the checkered flag for the fourth time in 2011. Moyer would hold on for second followed by Bartolotta, Rachael Pinkerman, and Jusits.

“It was a close finish and a good show,” said Jones from victory lane.

Kyle Vergata and Aaron Moyer were the heat winners. Jones set fast time with a lap of 14.045.

Jones also increased his lead in the points race and now has 624 followed by Talaska (502), Bartolotta (498), Kyle Jusits (434), and Rachael Pinkerman (432).

A Sweep for Stark in the Bandits

Kyle Stark won the twenty lap feature for the Roto Rooter Bandits after setting a new track record in qualifying and picking up the clean sweep.

Jim Lorang and Lee Haag led the field of ten cars to the green flag. Lorang would jump out to the early lead followed by Haag and Jason Coker. Coker would take over second on lap 2 with the high flying Stark already up to fourth.

On lap 5 Stark would make his way to the inside of Lorang for the lead and quickly build a huge advantage over the rest of the field. Chester Ace would race his way up to second on lap 6 with Jason Coker, Jonathon Coker, and Heather Stark in pursuit.

Stark’s sizeable lead over the field would disappear when the caution flag came out for an incident in turn two on lap 13.

The results following the restart would be the same as Stark quickly built up a lead and despite Ace’s best effort would never be challenged the rest of the way. Ace would finish second with Jason Coker, Heather Stark, and Jonathon Coker rounding out the top five.

Stark summed up his fortunes quite simply in a post race interview with Steve Wagner when he said, “I just got out front and pulled away.” The win was Stark’s fourth of the season.

Winners in the heat races were Jonathon Coker and Kyle Stark. Stark set a new track record with a lap of 14.952.

Ace has the leads in the points with 595 followed closely by the Lorang / Stark team with 588, Haag at 524, Jason Coker with 499 and the Turn Em Loose team at 414.
