by John Wells

OREGON, Wis. -- Zack Riddle saved the best for the end as he led the final two laps on his way to pick up the checkered flag in the 40 lap feature for the Rockweiler Insulation Late Models. Robert Hansberry Jr. maintained his lead in the Ho Chunk Gaming Area Sportsman with his victory while Aaron Moyer and Kyle Stark made trips to the winner’s circle in their respective divisions as well.

Two in a Row for Zack Riddle

They call him “Showtime” for a reason. Zack Riddle won for the second time in a row after leading the final two laps of a caution-marred 40 lap feature for the Rockweiler Insulation Late Models.

Scott Broughton and Kevin Knuese led the field of twenty-three Rockweiler Insulation Late Models to the green flag. Broughton would grab the early lead followed by Ed Szelagowski Jr., Knuese, Shane Morrissey and Brady Liddle.

On lap 5 Dale Nottestad would join the top five. But out front Broughton was enjoying a Friday night drive at MIS and had increased his lead to eight car lengths. On lap 12 Knuese would power past Szelagowski Jr. to take over second place.

The race stayed under green until lap 22 when a spin behind the leaders brought out the caution flag. Drivers took evasive action to avoid making contact with the cars. Now it was time to bring out the cone for the restart.

Broughton, Knuese, and Szelagowski Jr. all chose to stay on the inside while Liddle and Nottestad chose the outside line. The restart would not stay green after a car at the end of the field spun in turn one.

The second restart found the lineup to be the same with Broughton pulling away from Liddle coming out of turn two. Nottestad would move up to third followed by Riddle, Knuese, and Bobby Wilberg. On lap 24 Wilberg would take over fifth from Knuese.

But everyone was still chasing Broughton who had built up a lead until the caution flag came out on lap 26 for an incident that would send Szelagowski Jr. and Knuese to the rear of the field.

Broughton and Nottestad would elect to stay on the inside while Liddle and Wilberg took the outside. Broughton would gain the advantage once again while Liddle and Nottestad fought it out for second. But the race would only go green for one lap before a spin at the back brought out the yellow flag.

Riddle would move to the outside of row one on the restart as Broughton, Nottestad, and Liddle all stayed on the inside. Broughton and Riddle would run side by side followed by Nottestad, Wilberg, and Jeremy Miller. Broughton and Riddle would take turns having the lead by mere inches until Broughton got a car length advantage coming out of turn two on lap 33.

A spin on lap 36 would bring out another caution and the drama would continue. Once again, Broughton would stay on the inside while Riddle selected the outside. Wilberg would take the position behind Broughton while Liddle lined up next to Wilberg. Riddle would battle Broughton side by side for the lead until a front stretch incident involving several cars on lap 37 would bring out the caution flag and send the machines of Knuese, Jason Hicks, Ty Majeski, and Dan Jung to the pits courtesy of Seitz Towing.

Once again Broughton and Riddle would line up side by side with Wilberg behind Broughton and John Baumeister Jr. moving up behind Riddle. A spin before the green flag came out would lead to another caution.

Riddle would get a half car length lead on the outside after the restart, but Broughton would come back and pull nearly even just before the caution flag came out for a stalled car on lap 38.

For the first time in the late race restarts, Riddle would line up on the inside of Broughton. When Arne Thompson’s green flag waved, Riddle would jump out to the lead with Wilberg getting by Broughton for second. Riddle would hang on as the race stayed green the rest of the way to pick up his second win in a row. Wilberg would finish second followed by Broughton, Nottestad, and Miller.

“I just kept fighting for it. It was a pretty even field out here tonight. Two wins is a row is pretty great,” said Riddle.

Zack Riddle set the fast time in qualifying with a lap of 19.053 (94.473 mph). Heat winners were Jason Hicks, Jeremy Miller, and Dan Jung won the heat races.

Two-time defending champion Jeremy Miller is the points leader with two races to go with 762. Thanks to his fast time and victory, Riddle moves into second place with 712 followed by Broughton at 708, Wilberg with 695 and Nottestad at 684.

Robert Hansberry Jr. Gets It Done in Area Sportsman

Robert Hansberry Jr. won the 20 lap feature for the Ho Chunk Gaming Area Sportsman and increased his lead in the points standings. For Hansberry Jr., his fortunes tonight were opposite of his last start when his night ended up with a wrecked car.

Tommy Wutke and Greg Baxter comprised the front row of the thirteen car field of Ho Chunk Gaming Area Sportsman. The two continued around the track side by side for the first two laps with Wutke gaining a slight advantage on lap 3. On lap 5 Mike Taylor pulled to the inside of Baxter for second with Stephen Scheel up to third on lap 6. Taylor would pull to the inside of Wutke coming down the front shoot on lap 6 to take the lead with Scheel and Robert Hansberry Jr. moving to second and third on lap 7.

On lap 11, Hansberry Jr. would slide to the inside of Scheel and fight it out for second place behind Taylor. Brad Luck would join the mix along with Baxter as the five checked out from the field. On lap 16 Hansberry Jr. would move to the outside of Taylor coming out of turn two and take over the lead. He would quickly put some distance between himself and Taylor to pick up the win. Luck would sneak by Taylor at the line for second with Stephen Scheel and Baxter rounding out the top five.

“I was just being patient out there and trying to race clean. We wanted to make sure we finished because after what happened the last time. We had a lot of people help us out this week after wrecking two weeks ago,” said Hansberry.

Fast qualifier was Robert Hansberry Jr. with a lap of 20.907 (86.096 mph). Heat races were won by Greg Baxter and TJ Goldade.

Thanks to his victory, Hansberry Jr. leads the points chase with a 769-720 advantage over Stephen Scheel. Austin Nason (664), Shaun Scheel (655), and Greg Baxter (620) round out the top five.

Aaron Moyer Cruises to Legends Victory

Aaron Moyer ran away from the field to win the 20 lap feature for the Pellitteri Waste Systems Legends. Moyer continues a solid run at MIS after beginning the season racing in North Carolina.

Veteran drivers Tim Narr and Tony Moyer brought the field of fifteen Pellitteri Waste Systems Legends to the green flag. Narr would lead the first circuit before Kevin Griffin passed him on the backstretch on the second lap. Kyle Jusits would move to second behind Griffin before the caution flag came out on lap 2 for a spin that sent Brandon Heisler and Andy Jones to the rear of the field.

Griffin would maintain the lead with Jusits and Aaron Moyer applying heavy pressure. On lap 6 Moyer would take the lead from the outside coming out of turn two. Griffin, Jusits and Cory Talaska would fight it out for second with Jusits taking that spot on lap 10.

Meanwhile out front Moyer had built a huge lead over the field. Talaska would take over second on lap 13 but desperately needed a caution flag to take away Moyer’s lead. It was a caution flag that would not come out as Moyer would cruise to victory lane followed by Talaska, Jusits, Griffin, and Rachael Pinkerman.

“It is great to be in victory lane. This feels pretty good,” said Moyer who also made sure to acknowledge his parents’ wedding anniversary.

Andy Jones was quickest in qualifying with a lap around the Ring of Fire in 14.164. Kyle Vergata and Cory Talaska were victorious in the heat races.

Despite a sixth place finish, seventeen year old Andy Jones has a commanding lead in the points with a total of 807 which is also the highest total of any MIS driver this season. Cory Talaska (688), Vince Bartolotta (649), Kyle Jusits (596), and Rachael Pinkerman (593) round out the top five.

Kyle Stark Makes Sixth Trip to Victory Lane

Coming into the night, the team of Jim Lorang / Kyle Stark was tied with Chester Ace for the points championship. At the end of the night and thanks to Stark’s sixth feature win, they are now the new leader in the Bandit standings.

Dan Snyder and Daniel Harried had the honors of bringing the Roto Rooter Bandits field of eleven cars to the green flag in their twenty lap feature. Jason Coker would get by the front row to take the lead after the first lap with Chester Ace up to second one lap later. On lap 3 Ace would power by to the inside of Coker coming out of turn four to take the lead.

Ace would build a ten car length lead while Coker and Kyle Stark fought it out for second. Stark would take the second position from Coker on lap 6 before the caution came out one lap later for a spin.

This meant that Ace’s lead would be negated and the shootout between Ace and Stark was about to begin. Stark and Ace would run side by side for a couple of laps before Stark took the lead. Jon Coker would move into third followed by John Beale and Snyder.

Stark would lead the rest of the way and hold off Ace for the win and the points lead in the Bandit division. Jon Coker would finish third followed by Beale, and Snyder.

“I did what I needed to do,” said Stark who spoke to announcer Jordan Kuehne in victory lane.

Fast time was set by Kyle Stark with a lap of 15.065 while Lee Haag and Stark won the eight lap heat races.

Stark / Lorang have an 802-794 lead over Ace in the points race while Haag (677), Jason Coker (650), and Turn Em Loose Racing (561) complete the top five.
