by Verwayne GreenhoeCRYSTAL, Mich. -- After two weeks of lots of rain, lots of action at Crystal Motor Speedway Saturday was almost guaranteed. The rained off features from the ASAP Sales and Service sponsored August 4th event were run first.
In the Races On The Web.com Flinn Stock event, Jaycee Baker out dueled Samantha Klaus for her first feature win over Lee Zahm, Chris Brown, Bree Brasington, Chancey Baxter, Tyson Minier, Shane Wiggins, Cody Everingham, Ashley Wilkins, and Samantha Klaus. Brasington and Klaus scored heat wins.
Roger Wing came from mid pack to take his fifth Kentucky Fried Chicken Late Model feature of 2012 over Matt Pickard, Tom Dusen, Scott Baker, Kyle Borgman, Mike Fountain, Carl Ries, Scott Nieman, Dean Huizenga, and Scott Philips. Huizenga scored the B feature with heats falling to Baker, Eric Monk, and Bill Beardslee.
Jerry Hunt came out fast and held on for the win in the PRW USA IMCA Modified event over Dan Wiggins II, Josh Borton, Chad Wernette, Myron DeYoung, Robert Hutson, Brody Bowser, Chad Maurer, Milt Montgomery, and Taylor Wiles. Wernette had advanced by taking the B Main while Montgomery, Hunt and Wiggins took heats.
Don Rohn got out front early in the Port City Racing Pro Stock feature and then held off Chaney Newland to win his second feature event of the year. Vern Buskirk grabbed third, followed by Josh Loomis, Jeramie Raby, Jason Playter, Jr., Ryan Kent, Mike Husted, Blake Hollenbeck, and Todd Bush. Raby and Rohn wracked up feature wins.
Garrett Wiles waited until making the last turn in the last lap to edge out Richard Melton for the win in the Engine Pro Pro Truck feature. Gary Dancer came home with third, followed by David Dancer, Dave Peters, Mike Seaman, Jamie McCormick, Ashlee Scott, Ryan Paradise, and Chris DeCamp. Wiles and Dancer had picked up heat wins in earlier action.
Chris Wiggins and Doug Helsel had a hard fought battle but Wiggins held on to score the feature with Helsel tight behind, followed by Brenten DeYoung, Chance Allen, Randy Wellman, Dennis Parker, Doug McKeown, Sr., William Wilkins, Jr., Matt Clark, and Shane Spencer. Wiggins and Allen scored heat gold.
With ‘old business’ out of the way, it was time to work on the regularly scheduled event, the “Smoke Shop Dave Sprunger Memorial,” paying tribute to long time track sponsor, Dave Sprunger of the Smokers Club of Mt. Pleasant. The store has been a long time sponsor of the Street Stock division plus sponsored many individual cars across the years.
In the Smoke Shop Dave Memorial Street Stock event, the feature once again boiled down to Chris Wiggins and Doug Helsel battling it out for the win with Wiggins edging out Helsel for the honor. David Grega was third, followed by James Prochazka, Randy Wellman, Amber Eberspeaker, Doug McKeown, Sr., Jamie Fancett, Dennis Parker, and Ryan Lewis. Prochazka and Wiggins won heats. With only one more night of points racing left, Helsel holds a slender two point lead over Brenten DeYoung.
Don Prout battled off David Dancer to score his first Engine Pro Pro Truck feature of 2012. Jamie McCormick grabbed third, followed by Ashlee Scott, Dave Peters, Ryan Paradise, Chris DeCamp, Tim Sooy, Garrett Wiles, and Mike Seaman. Prout and Paradise posed for heat wins earlier in the night. In the points race, Scott has a virtual lock on the season championship by virtue of her 34 point lead over second place Peters.
Rookie Jason Playter, Jr. edged out some fierce competion to take his very first Port City Racing Pro Stock feature as he won over Mike Husted, Chaney Newland, Jacob Headley, Vern Buskirk, Don Rohn, Josh Loomis, Todd Bush, Jack Emmons, Jr., and Andrew Fidler. Buskirk and Playter had taken earlier heat honors. Buskirk holds a three point lead over Newland going into the final points event of the season.
Dan Wiggins II came home the winner in the PRW USA IMCA Modified feature over Robert Putt, John DeYoung, Jr., Chad Wernette, Chad Maurer, Josh Borton, Myron DeYoung, Armond Holley, Jr., Paul Grosnickle, and Tim Tuttle. Tuttle also claimed the B Main with heats going to Jim Hale Jr., Borton, and Wiggins. The Modified division is the only class that will continue to rack up points until the very last race of the season on September 15th. Right now, Wernette holds a rather commanding lead over Bob Hutson but the division is full of strong runners and with three points events to go, anything can happen.
Jay Van Dyke took the early lead in the Kentucky Friend Chicken sponsored Late Model feature and never looked back. Kurt Mesman gave it a shot as he tried to reel in the high flying Van Dyke but settled for second over Tim Stott, Kyle Borgman, Roger Wing, Matt Pickard, Scott Baker, Rob Taylor, Scott Philips, and Andy Chester. Phillips came home with the B Main win while Wing, Baker, and Van Dyke triumphed in the earlier heat events. Pickard holds a seven point lead over Wing with but one race to go.
The Races On The Web Flinn Stock event saw Chris Brown edge out Bree Brasington for his second feature win of the year. Tyson Minier grabbed third, followed by Felicia Rohn, Chancey Baxter, Johnny Miller, Jaycee Baker, Cody Everingham, Cody Lake, and Ashley Wilkins. Baker and Brasington scooped up heat wins earlier. Baxter has an 11 point lead over Brasington going into the last night of points racing but in this division, anything can and may happen. Both are rookies but have had outstanding seasons so far.
