ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Former dirt late model star J R Fanelli made it two wins in two appearances with the traveling USLMA tour late model series Saturday night as he captured the crash shortened 50 lap feature at Sandia Motorsports Park. Even though Fanelli doesn't travel with the series, his two Sandia wins have placed 9th in the season standings after four events. Usual NASCAR Southwest Series competitior Danny Burson took advantage of the opportunity to race in his home state and he finished second to Fanelli. Les Wilson from Santa Fe NM ran third in the 27 car feature. Mike Day from Las Cruces made it a 1-2-3-4 sweep for New Mexico based teams. Jeff Larsen Jr from Pueblo CO was fifth and Robbie McCabe from Colorado Springs CO ran sixth.

The 29 car turnout was split into four qualifying heat races. Former Albuquerque dirt late model racer Robert Schorr won heat 1 over Doug Adams and Dusty Tutten. Fanelli outraced Day and Arizona's Billy Kann in heat 2 and Burson won heat 3 over recent USLMA winner Jim Sikes Jr and Larsen Jr. L Wilson took heat 4 ahead of point championship contenders Mike Hathaway and John Webb. Twenty seven of the 29 cars started the scheduled 75 lap feature with both Dutten and Calvin Wilson scratching. Fanelli won ahead of Burson, L Wilson, Day, Larsen Jr, McCabe, Hathaway, Webb, Jason Fields, Ron O'Neil, Schorr and Darrel Stutzman. Oklahoma City OK racer Webb came out of the race with a 2 point lead over Falcon CO competitor Hathaway. Former Winston West racer Bob Howard ran 20th, but remains third in points just 4 ahead of Sikes Jr, who was 26th. Only 16 of the 27 starters were racing at the checkered flag. O'Neil moved into fifth place in the series point standings.
