Second Win of the Season for Morgan in Old Wisconsin Smokehouse 60

by Dan Margetta

SLINGER, Wis. -- Conrad Morgan scored his second super late model feature victory of the season Sunday night at the Slinger Super Speedway as he bested fellow longtime veterans Lowell Bennett and Al Schill in the Old Wisconsin Smokehouse 60.

“I’m about out of breath,” an excited Morgan stated from victory lane, “We’ve been waiting for three years to beat Lowell (Bennett) and by God, we did it tonight…fair and square.”

“Lapped traffic came up and my spotter said, ‘you’d better get back behind him (Morgan).” Bennett stated afterwards, “After that I didn’t have a lot for him (Morgan). Al (Schill) was right there too and I think it was Veteran’s Day up front there.”

Cardell Potter and Jon Reynolds Jr. paced the field at the start and on the drop of the green flag, the outside groove advanced with Reynolds grabbing the early lead over Morgan, Bennett, and Brad Mueller. Reynolds, Morgan, and Bennett raced nose to tail as Morgan looked for a way around Reynolds while behind them Al Schill, Steve Apel, and Dennis Prunty began to move forward. Morgan looked to the outside of Reynolds on lap ten and after a few laps of side by side battling, was able to charge into the lead as Bennett and Mueller moved up to challenge Reynolds for second. Reynolds’ car kicked loose in turn two on lap 14 and as he saved it, Mueller was forced to slow, allowing Schill, Apel, and Dennis Prunty to race by. Morgan, Bennett, and Schill began to distance themselves from the rest of the field while Apel, Dennis Prunty, and Dale Prunty battled over fourth. Bennett followed Morgan through lapped traffic and once a break opened up, ducked to the inside just past the halfway mark. As Bennett drew alongside Morgan down the backstretch, approaching lapped traffic in turn three forced him to fall back in line behind Morgan in second while Schill again closed in third. With the top three racing nose-to-tail, the rest of the front runners began to experience problems in the closing laps as both Mueller and Apel left the speedway with mechanical problems by lap 45. Morgan drove the final laps in near perfect form, never allowing Bennett or Schill to get a chance to challenge as the top three crossed the finish line under the checkered flag in tight formation with Morgan scoring the win over Bennett and Schill. Dennis Prunty completed another strong run with a fourth place finish while Dale Prunty was fifth. Mike Egan finished in sixth followed by Jon Reynolds Jr. and Brad Dahmer while Randy Schuler and Scott Schoeni completed the top ten finishers. Earlier in the evening, Dale Prunty won the super late model fast dash and Collin Bamke was the fastest qualifier at 11.543 seconds.

Dan Heying held off Dave McCardle to win the 35-lap late model feature to score his second main event victory of the season.

Brad Keith and Heying led the field to the green flag and Keith held the point early over Heying and Trevor Dassow while McCardle and Rob Braun were close behind. The leaders ran in close quarters nose-to-tail and as they gridlocked together entering turn one on lap seven, the accordion-like effect swept up Dassow who was sent sliding to the infield as the race remained under green. The caution flag appeared a lap later for debris on the racetrack with Keith leading over Heying and McCardle. Keith maintained the lead as racing resumed but briefly lost the top spot to Heying just before the event was slowed again a lap later when Jack Rabey experienced mechanical problems in turn one. Heying lined up on the inside for the restart and raced to the lead as the green flag appeared while Keith became caught in the outer groove as McCardle and Braun charged around for second and third respectively. Behind Heying and McCardle, Braun was under heavy pressure from Ryan DeStefano in their battle over third with DeStefano eventually taking the position by lap 25. There was no catching Heying in the final laps and he drove to the win ahead of McCardle and DeStefano while Steven Schulz edged Braun at the finish line for fourth. Earlier, DeStefano was the winner of the late model fast dash and Chris Blawat was the fastest qualifier at 12.400 seconds.

Mike Borchardt Jr. survived an intense late race battle with Jimmie Evans to take the lead in the final laps before going on to win the 30-lap Midwest Sportsman feature, his fourth of the season.

Evans led at the start over Brian Holtz and Gregg Pawelski as Borchardt fell in line in fourth. With Evans out front, the cars of Holtz and Pawelski became tangled together on the frontstretch on lap four and as the drivers sorted things out, the rear bumper cover of Holtz’s car was peeled away and flapped in the wind as both cars continued. Borchardt moved to second following the dust up while Dave Thomas advanced to third as Evans continued to lead. Evans was able to hold off the charges of Borchardt and Thomas as the event began to wind down but the caution flag waved on lap 23 as the cars of Pawelski and Andy Haver tangled in turn four. Jack Stern was unable to avoid the incident and his car ramped over the other two, crashing hard into the turn four wall. As racing resumed, Borchardt immediately went to work on Evans, taking to the outside groove to challenge for the lead. With Borchardt on the outside and Evans on the inside, the two battled door to door in the closing laps until Borchardt was able to pull ahead with two laps to go. Borchardt then drove to his fourth feature win of the season while Evans had to settle for second. Dave Thomas finished third ahead of Jay Shambeau and Mark Kissinger. Earlier, Dave Thomas was the winner of the Midwest Sportsman dash and Andy Haver set fast time at 12.856 seconds.

Steven Schulz brought his Sport Mod to the Slinger Speedway sporting the number 97 in honor of the late Steve Lurvey, a former owner of the car who drove modifieds at the track for many years and promptly drove to the victory in the 25-lap main event.

Schulz grabbed the lead at the start and never looked back as Tim Bell, Ron Schmitt, and Matt Pate battled behind him. Schulz extended his lead while farther back Bill Tandetzke and Bill Prietzel put on a show for the fans while racing side by side for fifth. Bell kept Schulz in his sights until the final laps when he suddenly dropped to the infield with problems as Schmitt drove by for second. Schulz would not be denied as he comfortably raced toward the checkered flag to score the win while Schmitt finished second. Pate crossed the line in third as Tandetzke and Prietzel rounded out the top five. Schulz also was the winner of the Sport Mod fast dash and Tandetzke was the fastest qualifier after turning in a lap at 12.347 seconds.

After experiencing problems in qualifying, Ryan Farrell rebounded nicely in the main event as he took top honors in the 18-lap Thunderstock feature, scoring the win over Aaron Cain and Ken Schraufnagel.

Farrell took the lead at the drop of the green flag and maintained the point as the caution flag waved on lap seven when Tim Kreuser looped in turn two and was collected by Jason Hennes. As racing resumed, Farrell again pulled out front while Adam Peschek and Ken Scraufnagel battled for second with Stephanie Losiniecki and Aaron Cain. As Farrell continued to pull away, the action for second was intense while farther back, Shawn Fick and Andy Welter locked horns on the backstretch with both cars heading to the infield as the race remained under green. Cain was able to race his way around into second late in the event but could not catch Farrell who scored the convincing win. Behind the top two, Schraufnagel finished third while Losiniecki and Peschek rounded out the top five. Schraufnagel captured the win in the Thunderstock fast dash and Cain set fast time for the division at 13.628 seconds.

Alex Prunty raced to the lead on lap ten and then held off Erik Long and Carl Benn to win the 16-lap Slinger Bees feature. Brandon Tackes and Joe Lang finished in fourth and fifth place respectively. Long was also the fastest qualifier for the Slinger Bees at 15.564 seconds. Joe DeStefano Sr. won the Speedway Guest Car event that featured crew members from the various teams that race at the speedway. Brian Davis drove his Subaru to the win in the Spectator Eliminator races and Justin Poenitsch won his first Figure 8 race of the season.
