Wilmot Speedway
Saturday, September 13, 2003 Weather woes at Wilmot
by Race AuthorWILMOT, Wis. -- Day-long showers forced Local Motion Entertainment, Inc. officials to cancel the planned racing program on Saturday, Sept. 13.
Lightning Lyle’s roll-over of a full-sized school bus has been rescheduled for Sept. 20.
A Dragon and its Dragon Master will reportedly be making several appearances in the Kenosha County area within the next week.
Broadway Bob, longtime legendary Hall of Fame promoter of Great Lakes Dragaway in Union Grove, is the Dragon Master for Draco, a fire breathing, smoke belching metal eating Dragon.
Both are coming to Local Motion Entertainment’s Wilmot Speedway for the first time ever on Saturday, Sept. 20.
Prior to the event at the one-third mile clay oval facility located on the Kenosha County Fairgrounds in Wilmot, Broadway Bob and Draco will be making appearances near I-94 and Hwy. 50 in Kenosha.
The Original Outlet Mall will be the site of Draco’s “playpen” Tuesday through Thursday, Sept. 16-18. Draco will be available for visits during the regular mall hours in the east side parking lot.
Draco will “sleep” at Best Western-Executive Inn at Hwy. 50 and I-94 in Kenosha.
Broadway Bob will be with Draco from 5-7 pm on Tuesday and Wednesday, and from 4-5 pm on Thursday. Draco will be leaving the area briefly on Thursday afternoon at about 5 pm, returning on Saturday morning.
“I’m am thrilled to be involved with my friends in motorsports at Wilmot Speedway,” said Broadway Bob. “Although I have been involved primarily with drag racing, I have always had a good relationship with the people at Wilmot as both facilities are located in the same county (Kenosha).”
“I am excited about brining my dear friend, Draco, to Wilmot in its only appearance at a dirt track oval facility within the state of Wisconsin this year,” Broadway Bob added. “I look forward to meeting and visiting with the fans at The Original Outlet Mall, and to see them come out to Wilmot on Sept. 20.”
As the 52nd consecutive season of operation for Wilmot, track championships will be decided in four regular classes that competed throughout the 2003 campaign.
The first will be on Saturday, Sept. 20 as the IMCA modifieds hold their season championship to determine who wears the 2003 crown.
The new Basic International 4-cylinder Cars (BIC) will hold its final point night on Sept. 20 as well. This division joined Wilmot’s regular classes on July 4 weekend, using the same rules as the class has at Lake Geneva Raceway where they compete on Friday nights along with some other special events.
The BIC cars coming to Wilmot was the result of an agreement between Kevin Dawson, Lake Geneva promoter where the cars compete on asphalt, and Wilmot promoters Gary Brown and Mike Simons.
In addition to the title programs on Sept. 20, winged outlaw sprints, hobby stocks, Hales Corners Sportsman and Hales Whales divisions will compete.
On Saturday, Sept. 27 the final season point championship events will be held for the winged outlaw sprints and hobby stocks. IMCA modifieds, Hales Sportsman and Hales Whales will be on the program competing in non-point shows.
Youngsters are encouraged to enter the Speedway’s coloring contest prior to Sept. 27 to be eligible for a bike giveaway courtesy of Herb’s Parts of Antioch.
The final major event of the season is planned for a special Homecoming Fall Festival/Fan Appreciation Celebration for Saturday, Oct. 4.
Included in the program will be a special Wilmot Open outlaw winged sprint car program. Planning to compete are 6-time Wilmot Speedway Champion Dave Moulis of Johnsburg, Illinois, 8-time Interstate Racing Association (IRA) and Wilmot Champion Joe Roe of Pleasant Prairie (formerly of Zion), current Wilmot sprint car point leader Rick Kelsey of West Allis, 2003 KELE World Challenge third place podium finisher and past King of Wisconsin Sprint Car Racing champion Kurt Winker of Pleasant Prairie, 2002 Michigan Sprint Series Champion and past Wilmot modified champion Tim Cox of Park City, Illinois and second generation winged warrior and current IRA top 10 driver Brian Kristan of Beach Park, Illinois .
Randy Sippel’s Open Wheel Driving School is posting a $500.00 bonus for the top finishing 360 sprint car.
Kurt Davis of West Allis, a past MSA 360 champion and current IRA top ten competitor leads a list of MSA competitors expected to compete.
Eastern Wisconsin Stock Car winged super-modifieds have been tentatively added plus mini-sprints.
IMCA-type modifieds, hobby stocks, Hales Sportsman and Hales Whales classes are scheduled with additional classes to be announced.
Fans and competitors are reminded to bring non-perishable food item donations to the Speedway Souvenir Building on race nights to become eligible for a new furnace or garage heater from Hy-Tech Heating & Cooling of Twin Lakes or a NEXTEL Cellular package from 1st Alliance in Delevan & Lake Geneva. The winners will be chosen on Oct. 4.
A post-race concert by country singing recording artist Linda Coil is planned on Oct. 4 with a rain date of Oct. 11.
Wilmot is scheduled to host racing on Oct. 11.
Tricycle races for the Kids & Racers for Victory! Fan Club will continue to be held each night prior to the National Anthem ceremony.
Due to the increase in the number of classes competing, the starting time for racing has been moved up to 6 p.m. for the remainder of the season.
Despite all of the special events planned for the remainder of the year, the additional classes and additional laps, there is no increase in the family directed grandstand admission ticket prices.
