CHEMUNG, N.Y. -- The skies, though threatening at times, remained clear above Chemung Speedrome Saturday night. JR Kent picked up his 2nd win this year in the NASCAR Weekly Modified division. Joining him in victory lane were Terry Potrzebowski (Super Stocks), Art Priscott (INEX Legends), Archie Haner (4 Cylinders), Zach Curren (North East Mod Lites) and Fred Peters (Speedrome Juniors).

In NASCAR Weekly Modified action, Zach Truesdail and Daren Scherer won the 2 heat races then made up the front row for the 40-lap feature. JR Kent, who started 3rd, made his way to the front with Tony Hanbury right behind him. Larry Jaynes spun on the 15th lap, putting Hanbury alongside Kent. Truesdail and Tim Gullo were right behind them for the restart. Kent won the drag race to turn 1 but Hanbury won he respect of many when he ran the bulk of this race on the outside lane trying to power his way around the leader. He’d get another restart opportunity following a yellow when debris (Gullo’s muffler) littered the front stretch. Again Hanbury tried, and again Kent prevailed on the restart. The 3rd, and final, caution flag came out when Lee Sharpsteen got into Scherer and turned him around. That set up a 5-lap dash to the checkered flag. Kent was glued to the low side of the track and Hanbury came close but never passed him. The win, Kent’s 2nd this year, put to end a great race between two very talented drivers. “I’m not to where Tony is but it was all about who got to the front first,” Kent said. Hanbury was the first to congratulate him for a win he said Kent deserved. Hanbury settled for 2nd in this one, with Truesdail, Gullo and Charlie Sharpsteen rounding out the top five.

The 25-lap Super Stock feature nearly had half a dozen different winners, but the victory lane interview was with Terry Potrzebowski. Tim Gullo led early but there was plenty of 3-wide racing that resulted in a nice move for the top spot by heat winner Jeff Goodwin. Lap 11 was pivotal. Brittany Jack spun off turn 2 but cars dropped like flies during the caution period. Leader Goodwin headed to the pits, 2nd place Mike Nichols broke with distributor problems, and the cars of Jim House and Terry Ostrander also broke. Chris Daugherty inherited the lead and, when racing resumed, soon had Potrzebowski glued to his rear bumper. With 3 laps remaining Potrzebowski got into Daugherty and turned him around. The restart was yet another pivotal moment. Rookie Jesse Johns was the new leader with the faster cars starting at the rear. Daugherty jumped the restart and was penalized 2 spots for doing so. It appeared that he was leading the way but it was Potrzebowski’s race to lose and he didn’t. Johns was 2nd, followed by Daugherty, House, and Hank Buchanan.

Art Priscott experienced both the lows and highs of racing in the 20-lap INEX Legends feature. As the field took the green a wicked 5-car wreck unfolded on the front stretch. Point leader Matt Priscott, the track’s defending champion and Art’s son, got airborne and he required medical assistance. During the red, Art checked out his son and they decided he should race. When it did resume Van Michael took the lead with Priscott in hot pursuit. As the pair approached the lap car of Andy Brigham, Michael went high and Priscott went low in turn 2. Priscott made the right decision and the lead was his. Over the final 7 laps Daren Scherer tried to pass but Art Priscott wasn’t to be denied this one. Matt Price finished 3rd, followed by Brandon Michael and Richie Vanderpool. Art skipped victory lane, opting to load up and head to the hospital, where Matt was treated and released. He and Vanderpool won the heat races.

Archie Haner’s 4 Cylinder had let him down each week, so he bought Ray Marshall’s #37 that Ajay Potrzebowski had driven to victory lane in 4 of the 6 races. Haner won his heat race but almost gave away the win when he slowed for a black flag that was waving for someone else. Haner took off from the pole and led the 20-lap race until officials black-flagged Jeremy Potrzebowski, who was running 2nd, for failure to secure his window net. It was Haner who slowed and gave the race lead to Bob Curren. Curren was heavily challenged, first by Gene Purvis and then by Haner, who got around both in the final laps. “I thought it was for me so I slowed,” he told the crowd. Purvis finished 2nd, followed to the line by Curren, Jason Gleason and Joe Lane.

Zach Curren’s 2nd win in the North East Mod Lite division padded his point lead. “We tried something different tonight and it worked,” he said in victory lane.

Fred “Bubba” Peters picked up his 6th win of the year in the 10-lap Speedrome Juniors division.

Michaela Thompson and Austin Gleason won bicycles donated by announcers Carol Houssock, Randall Stone and Dano Williams. Duane “Raceguy” Manzer won the 50/50 drawing.

This weekend Chemung slashes the adult grandstand admission price in half for the annual Pack the Track Night. Fans will also enjoy a pit party during intermission. Pits open at 4, grandstand and practice at 5, with the first race getting the green at 6:30. For more information go to www.chemungspeedrome.net.
