Gordon Wins Elkins Speedway Opener

by Bob Reed

KERENS, W.Va. -- Bob Gordon, Keyser led all 25 laps of the opening night LM feature at the Elkins Speedway to capture his first ever win at the Speedway.

Gordon who has led several features in the last couple years only to lose them in the late laps was extremely happy in victory circle. When asked how he held off 2nd place Paul Wilmoth for the entire distance he said: “I used the whole track and tried not to let him know where I was going to go next. He raced me real clean.” He also said: “The track was real smooth and you could run anywhere on it.”

At the drop of the green Paul Wilmoth from the outside pole took the lead and led going down the back straight but inside pole sitter Gordon got by Wilmoth coming through turns 3 & 4 to get back in front and led the first lap and all the rest. Wilmoth never gave up and was under him almost every lap but just couldn’t get past. Wilmoth ultimately settled for a close 2nd.

Charlie George moved into 3rd on lap 3 and chased the lead pair the final 22 laps but never challenged for the lead. Robbie Scott and Tim Senic traded 4th and 5th almost every other lap with Scott finishing ahead of Senic at the end. Steve Wilmoth started 11th after spinning in his heat. He then spun in turn 3 on lap 6 of the feature collecting Josh Coffman, Skip Hare, Billy Holbert, Richard Frazier, Chuck Harper and Steve Booth. This wreck ended the night for Harper, Hare and Holbert who went pitside. Wilmoth was sent to the rear but advanced through the field to finish a very strong 6th at the finish. Seventh starting Butch McGill looked to have a bad push from the start and began dropping positions early on and finally dropped out on lap 19.

At the finish Gordon led Paul Wilmoth, George, Scott and Senic. Heats to Gordon and Paul Wilmoth.

Notes: Gordon’s #31 Monte Carlo is a Rocket chassis and is Chevrolet powered. His main sponsors are MCT Trucking, Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic, Roy Jones Trucking, 3-J Designs and T&C Motorsports Photography.

Notes: 17 cars started the feature with only 9 running after 25 laps. 5 cautions slowed the action. Hard Charger was Richard Frazier who started 16th and finished 8th, a gain of 8 spots.

Outside polesitter Chad Green ‘The Wendel Rocket’ out sped polesitter John Tallman coming off turn 2 and took the lead and led all 20 laps to capture the first every Fastrack LM feature at the Elkins Speedway. Tallman driving an open motored car held on to 2nd until lap 5 when Shane Hitt passed him. He then was passed for 3rd on lap 10 by Kyle Thomas and for 4th by Shawn Jett on lap 11. The next Crate motored car in line the #32 of Cody Hardesty tried his best over the final 9 laps to get by Tallman but could never make a pass. At the checkered Green led Hitt, Thomas, Jett and Tallman. Heats to Tallman and Green.

Notes: At the finish of the first 6 cars 5 were Crate motored cars with Tallman in 5th the only open motored car. Only 9 cars with 8 starting the feature. Six completed 20 laps. Three cautions slowed the action.

Notes: Last years SL track champion Kevin Keene had ignition problems all night. He missed his heat, started scratch in the feature and pulled out after 11 laps.

Nolan Dalton, Morganton won his first ever TSMA Modified Feature at the Elkins Speedway by leading all 15 laps. Louie Krushansky and Shawn Davis chased him the entire distance but couldn’t catch him and finish in that order. Phil Jeffries who started on the rear ended up 4th while Vic Vandergrift started 5th and finished 5th. Heats to Dalton and Davis.

Notes: Only 8 modifieds in the pits with 7 starting the feature. Brian Blake broke in his heat. Dalton has won features at the Speedway in LM, SL and PS plus now in Mods in his long career on dirt.

Last years Street Stock Champion Dusty Swecker started out the 2009 on a strong note by leading all laps of his heat all laps of the feature.

Sixth starting Randy Bohan finished a strong 2nd while Spec Yokum finished 3rd. Yokum almost lost it in the early part of the race and dropped back. He then had to charge back through the field for his 3rd place finish.

Randy Thornhill ran 2nd for the first 4 laps then spun. He never ran right after that and finished 7th at the finish.

At the checkered Swecker led Bohan, Yokum, Johnny Singleton and Teresa Vaughn. Heats to Thornhill and Swecker.

Notes: 11 cars in the pits with 10 starting the feature. 9 were running after 12 laps. Only 1 caution.

In SS action Jeff Fornash, Salem ran off and hid. Fornash led all laps of the heat and the feature for the win. At the checkered he led Michael Moreland, Todd Bunnell, John Ford and Kenny Vest.

Lester Jenkins, Gassaway won his first ever 4 Cyl feature at the Elkins Speedway when he passed Steve Sisler on the final lap going down the back straight. Sisler had passed polesitter and early leader Kenny Roback coming through turns 3 & 4 on lap 2. Sisler held off Jenkins for every lap but seeming to be having handling problems the final laps and Jenkins got closer and closer. Then on the final lap coming off turn 2 he slipped up the track and Jenkins dove under him and made the pass for the lead and the win. Sisler held on for 2nd with Robeck 3rd, Dave Mullenax 4th and Brady Stutler 5th. Robeck won the heat.

Notes: Only 7 cars with all 7 starting the feature. Only Lynn Moore failed to finish as he pulled out early. The red #B71 of Brady Stutler is the ex #22 of Mike Murphy which was day-glo green last year.

Last year’s Hornet Points champion Donnie Wamsley, Clarksburg led all 12 laps for the win. Jason Moore chased him for the first 11 Ύ laps until he slipped up in turn 4 and Doug Lewis took 2nd. Moore held on for 3rd with Jay Singlinger 4th and Jason Frazier 5th. Wamsley also won the heat.

Ryan Watson, Weston won the Mini-Wedge feature over Eliott Newlon, Garrett Paugh, James Nelson and Cody Carpenter. Heats to Newlon and Paugh.

Racing continues next Friday, May 22nd at the Speedway with action in all 7 classes. For further information check our website @www.elkinsspeedway.com.
