by Randy AlbertFALLS CREEK, Wis. -- Denny Fenton takes his first win in the BWP Bats Steel Block Late Model class. Fuzzy Fields makes it win number two in the Street Stock division. Ben Smith also makes it win number one in the Pure Stock class and in the Front Wheel Drive Four Cylinder cars, Chuck White continues to dominate with win number 5.
The BWP Bats Steel Block Late Models lined up behind Ed Connor from DuBois and Eric Moore from Frenchville for their 25 lap feature event. Moore and Denny Fenton from Clearfield split the jump for the lead quickly getting by Connor on the high and low side respectively. A first lap caution set the stage for what would be a Moore/Fenton fight for the lead with Moore on the high side and Fenton using the inside rail. Behind them Bob McMillen out of St. Marys had worked his way around Connor and Chris Farrell from Clearfield was knocking on his door. Fenton had briefly slipped by Moore but was reset to start in second place due to a caution. On the restart Farrell powered by Connor on the outside while Moore had his hands full with a hard charging Fenton. Moore wasn’t about to give up any real estate in holding off Fenton while another good race developed behind them in the race for third and fourth between Farrell and McMillen. Moore looked like he had a slight advantage but Fenton managed to put his nose under him at Bob Sullinger’s flag stand a couple of times. Farrell decided to make it interesting by making the pass on McMillen and looking like it was going to be a three car race for the lead. Moore had been using the cushion effectively the entire race but his luck ran out when something happened causing the car to spin in turn two collecting Farrell in the unfortunate mishap. Moore left the track while Farrell went to the rear for the restart. This reset the top five as Fenton, McMillen, Connor, Bo Lockwood from Hazen, and Rich Runyan out of Brockway, both Lockwood and Runyan were having a good runs. While Fenton took full advantage of his new position, Rick Maxim from Reynoldsville found his way into the top five. High on the rail and finding traction for a major move toward the front was Chris Farrell blasting his way back into contention. Fenton was smooth and fast out front and Farrell ran out of time in his outside assault. Denny Fenton took his first win of the season in the always competitive class. It was well deserved as one slipped away a few weeks ago on the last lap.
Heat race winners included; Dwayne Brooks, Denny Fenton, and Eric Moore.
Street Stocks were next on the track to do battle for 20 laps of dirt racing action. Leading the charge was Chad O’Brien from Strattanville. To his right was Fuzzy Fields racing out of Brockport. O’Brien took to an early lead but was being challenged down low by Fields. Ed Connor was also applying the heat fresh off his ride minutes earlier in the Late Model class. Johnny Lindenpitz from Knoxdale also wanted to be part of the up-front action and had a good view of the three wide skirmishes up front. Behind them Brandon Connor, also from DuBois and Brian Rhed were enjoying the competition for fifth and sixth place. A caution placed Ed Connor and O’Brien up front with O’Brien using the cushion to trade the lead with Connor who was skimming the tires on the inside. Fields was fast as he rode the bumper of Connor trying to find a way through the two leaders. Within two to three car lengths of the leaders were Rhed, Lindenpitz, and Brandon Connor. The leader of the next pack was Paul Blake from Weedville but the main attraction was at the front. The laps looked the same but the action was exciting as all six cars made for some great green flag racing. It wasn’t until O’Brien got a bit high in turn two that Connor cleared him but Fields replaced O’Brien on the high line in the chase to the checkered flag. Ed Connor and Fields traded the lead numerous times on every lap, initially Connor had the lead at the flag stand but Fields began to gain an advantage on the backstretch and at the start/finish line by a nose each time. O’Brien had third place but had to check up for a slower car giving Rhed a slight advantage and the position. It was still a tossup as Bob Sullinger threw the white flag for the last lap. Fields held a slight edge as they both came out of turn four with Connor trying to find one last bit of bite coming off of the turn. Fields held the position through the wave of the checkered flag taking his second win of the season in some very exciting racing.
Heat races were won by Steve Arthurs and the feature winner, Fuzzy Fields.
Jim Challingsworth from St. Marys and Ben Smith out of Penfield lead the pure stock field to the track for the next event in the night’s entertainment. Smith managed to gain an early advantage followed by Challingsworth, Devin Lewis from Weedville, Dave Kohler out of Rockton, and Matt Heindl from St. Marys. Heindl was on the move using the cushion left by the previous two feature races moving quickly from fifth to third place. Smith held the lead as Heindl made the pass on Challingsworth using the outside groove. Much like the Street Stock race Heindl managed to nose inside Smith on a number of laps but Smith held the lead, but not by much. Colton Joiner from DuBois had been pressuring Challingsworth for third and finally made the pass with two laps to go. Lapped traffic looked like it would play a role in the Smith-Heindl duel but a late race caution eliminated that factor in the final outcome. The closing two laps saw Heindl continue to pursue Smith but Smith’s first win was not to be denied; he went on to cross the finish line almost exactly one car length ahead of Heindl. They were followed by Joiner, Challingsworth, and Doug Surra from Kersey.
Three Pure Stock heat races were won by Matt Heindl, Devin Lewis, and Dave Kohler.
The Front Wheel Drive Four cylinders lined up for the final event of the evening with Frank Barrett, III from DuBois and Mike Lucas out of Philipsburg making up the front row. At the drop of the green flag Lucas took to an early lead using the outside line that gave him a win in last week’s race. He was followed closely by Zack Lindemuth from Brockport and Chuck White from DuBois. White was closing fast on Lucas when an early caution brought the field back together for a restart. Lucas chose to restart on the outside of White but in a few laps White managed to squeeze one more high grove out of the 1/3 mile oval gaining momentum for the pass. Behind them Lindemuth had some early pressure from Randy Albert out of Morrisdale but Albert was unable to gain enough steam to complete the pass. After the pass for the lead White managed to stretch out a ten car length lead going on to take his fifth win of the season. He was followed across the line by Lucas, Lindemuth, Albert, and Barrett.
Heat race winners in the division included Randy Albert and Mike Lucas.
