(Nov. 16, 2002) - The old saying 'I'm not getting older, just better' rang true Saturday night at the Missouri State Fairgrounds in Sedalia. The saying well-described the second race night of the 2002-3 Coliseum Indoor Winter Speedway Kart Racing Series.
The 5th Annual weekly series started out very well the week before, and this week it got even better.
With the start time being launched precisely at the advertised 5 p.m., 109 karts signed-in to run a total of 59 race events that ended with the final checkered flag at 9:20.
Last week, Columbia, Mo.'s Mikey Halliburton scored double victories in the Stock Light and Medium classes. This week he had to settle for second in one of those events.
Taking Halliburton's twin win stature away this weekend was Waverly's Jeremy Lyle. He captured top honors in both the Goody's Steakburger Jumior 1 Light and Busso's AA Muffler Junior 1 Heavy slots.
Josh "Beavis" Fisher of Smithton has moved up to the Junior 2 wars this year and has won all heats and features in the first two events the season. (Photo: Brian Klein/On Track Photographics) | Josh Fisher from Smithton kept a perfect run rolling as he won both heats and the feature for the second time this season in the Energy Release Junior 2 Light division. Fisher, who has won a total of 4 championships since the Coliseum Series started, won double crowns last year. His first was in the Rookies and an additional one in Junior 1. He continues to scorch the super-quick, 1/8-mile dirt oval in his initial year of Junior 2 competition.
Mike Floyd got it all together this week as the Jefferson City flash easily won the Russell Karting Specialties 2-cycle Controlled event. In the KDKD-FM Checkered Flag Open run, he consistently tries to find a way around his hometown friend Wendall Shorthose. Shorthose was able to stay steady out in front, by mere inches, for his second Open win in as many weeks.
There are a lot of fresh racers in both of the rookie 5- to 8-year-old classes. And new seasonal winners made a showing this week. In the Anderson Kart Engines Rookie Beginners, Racin' Mason Shoemaker from Fulton copped his first-ever top score while Lenexa, Kan.'s Ben Wolf came out on top this time in the Terry's Osage Express Rookie Advanced rumble.
The only serious, wheels up shunt took place in the fast and always furious Fairfield Motor Service Stock Heavy skirmish. Sedalia's Devin Fisher flipped hard out of turn two in the feature while challenging for second. The kart landed on his hand, breaking a couple of fingers. He denied going to the hospital and escorted his kart back to the pits, taking care of other details first.

That event was won by another Sedalian, Shawn Morton.
It was definitely the Simpsons show in the Kix Radio Kage Kart feature. Versailles' siblings Matt and Melody Simpson finished one-two in the mix.
Two well-honored retired sprint drivers attended the outstanding program. Visiting to view his grandson's short racing career results was long time sprinter Bill Utz from the track's same town. Chatting with Utz was long time super mod and sprint chauffeur Dale Moore, who now resides in Warsaw.
The racing fans out for their wintertime need for speed definitely get their attendance money's worth every week, including this coming Saturday night's event #3 of this series.
That, along with the supplied heat in the historic Missouri State Fairgrounds building and the Coliseum Karting concessions delicious food, fans and competitors always look forward to returning.
Admission to the grandstands for adults is $5, 7 to 10 years old is $3 and under 6 years of age are free. The pit office starts taking sign-ins at 1 p.m., the grandstands are unlocked at 3, hot laps circle at 4 with the first qualifying heat set for 5.
