Sunday, September 5, 2004 Rookie Zach Franklin prevails in Pure Stocks
 by Race AuthorTENINO, Wash. -- Seventeen-year-old Zach Franklin took his Tire Dogs sponsored car all the way to Victory Lane Sunday night at South Sound Speedway in the Hinkle Homes Pure Stocks. Franklin took the lead on the first lap after starting outside the front row. Steve Gerdts fell in behind him with Mike Carlson in third. Marshall Hallett and Amanda Easley fought for fourth position until lap 14 when Easley finally took the position.
Steve Gerdts fell back from second on lap 19 when Carlson, Easley and Hallett all passed him. On the next lap the caution came out for Gerdts and Eric Lee spinning. Lee got a black flag for the incident and both were sent to the back. That was the only caution of the 35 lap main event. Franklin crossed over the white line first for his first win of his career. Mike Carlson was second with Amanda Easley third. Point leader Marshall Hallett was fourth and Steve Woods was fifth. Woods had earlier in the evening set a new track record of 16.595 seconds. Steve Gerdts charged forth in the dash to win, his second of the season. Zach Franklin also took the B heat race with Mitchell Woods in second and Jeff Fresen third. Eric Lee took the A heat followed by Bobby Moore and Marshall Hallett. David Tresenriter led the first two laps of the A heat before a mechanical issue took him out of the race and made him unable to run the main event. Dennis Faulkner was also unable to start the main event.
Dennis Shaffer qualified fastest for the Cut Rate Auto Parts Economy 4-Cylinders. Marc Nelson won the A heat race with Duane Lacy and Mike Hayne close behind. Richard Smith led the first half of the B heat race before Todd VanDiest took over to win with Smith in second. On the second lap of the B heat race Dwayne Hardin got into Floyd Hayne, sending Hayne into the wall. Hayne was unable to continue in the heat race but fixed his car to race in the main event and took the lead on lap one. Lap three brought out the first caution when Jim Cattrell slowed way down and took his car off. Point leader Duane Lacy also left during the caution. Marc Nelson took the lead from Hayne on lap six and Tom Keehan moved into second. Lap eight brought out another caution when Richard Smith spun and left debris on the track. Floyd Hayne left the track on this lap but was back before the green flew. On the restart Dennis Shaffer got passed Tom Keehan for second and on lap 10 took the lead from Marc Nelson. Tony Bartlotti moved into second on lap 11 from his 12th place start. Dennis Shaffer his second main event of the season. Tony Bartlotti finished second with Marc Nelson in third and Tom Keehan in fourth. Todd VanDiest was fifth and Mike Hayne was sixth. Mike Hayne also won the dash.
It was the Vintage Modifieds Championship night at South Sound Speedway and Bob Wheeler Jr. was leading coming into it. Dave Trapp qualified fastest while Wheeler won the dash. Robert Rux led all eight laps of the B heat race to win with Ray Hobbs in second and Eric Ball in third. Dave Trapp won the A heat race with Jeff Peterson in second and Mike Clother in third. Rux and Ball started on the front row of the main event. Rux took the lead on lap one but Eric McClain took over on lap four. Bob Wheeler Jr. moved into second on lap five. Jeff Peterson had secured third until lap 23 when Mike Clother took over. The only caution of the race came on lap 30 when Peterson spun. Eric McClain won the main event but it was Bob Wheeler who finished second that won the Championship. Mike Clother finished third in the race with Dave Trapp fourth and Ray Hobbs fifth. Ike Hoskinson was the only car unable to stay on the track for the whole race. He left the track on lap 13.
The Old Timers Racing Association visited South Sound Speedway Sunday night.
There were 16 Canadian drivers and two Oregon drivers that participated. Ron Morneau qualified fastest with a 16.403 second lap. Dean Gill won the dash over Morneau, Dan Curtis and Jesse Dardingo. Al Prendergast led all eight laps of the B heat race for the win. Mike Batman was second with Greg Ray third. Rich Bennett won the A heat race followed by Dardingo and Warren Johnstone. Prendergast led the first lap of the main event before Mike Batman took over. On lap nine Johnstone took his car into the pits but was back missing only two laps. The first yellow came on lap 12 when Jim Chamberland slowed and pulled into the middle. Another caution was thrown on the next lap when Rich Bennett got into Al Prendergast. The pair was running second and third. The green flew and Jim Rankin took advantage and took the lead on lap 14. On lap 15 there was another caution for Ron Morneau and Greg Ray spinning. Rankin was still leading at the restart with Dean Gill in second and Hugh Glover in third. Gill took the lead on lap 20 and lap 21 brought another caution. Dan Curtis, Mike Batman, Dave Gill, and Hugh Glover all got together. Batman was the only one to continue in the race. They stayed green until lap 29 when Larry Wannamaker spun. Laps 32 brought out the final caution of the race when the leaders all got tangled up coming out of turn four. Leader Dean Gill, Ron Morneau, and Jim Rankin all spun into the wall. Jesse Dardingo, who was running second, got the black flag for the incident. Glen Danchuck was now the leader and eventual winner after 35 laps. Dan Curtis finished second with Mike Batman, Greg Ray and Dean Gill finishing up in the top five. Jim Rankin was sixth and Dennis Morneau was seventh.
