WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah -- SPEARS Southwest Tour Series Point Leader #43 Derek Thorn picked up the win tonight at Rocky Mountain Raceways’ NAPA 125. Starting in ninth, Thorn took the lead on lap eleven and never looked back. Second in series points #18 Jim Pettit II, finished in second and third in series points #33 M.K. Kanke finished in third.

This is the SPEARS Southwest Tour Series second time in series history to visit Rocky Mountain Raceways 3/8 mile, high-banked oval. “The SPEARS Southwest Tour Series put on a great show for the fans of Salt Lake City. Congratulations to Derek Thorn for his victory and I look forward to having the series return to Rocky Mountain Raceways in 2013,” says Mike Eames, Rocky Mountain Raceways General Manager.

In other ASA weekly racing action, #18 Johnny Luttmer had a strong lead in the Maverik Modifieds 50-lap main event as he held off #20 Dan McCoy, #50 Roger Wilson and #84 Mark Ith Jr. A caution on lap 28 would change that as the field was brought back together with Luttmer on the inside of the double-file restart with McCoy on the outside.

On lap 29 McCoy quickly pulled ahead of Luttmer in turn 2 to take the lead. Ith Jr. then passed Luttmer in turn 4 to claim the second position. Luttmer hung on to secure a top three finish. This is McCoy’s first win of the 2012 season following a 2011 campaign that produced multiple main event victories for the #20 Maverik Modified. Wilson finished in fourth and #0 Michael Holder finished in fifth.

In the Super Stock class, #95 Greg Young passed #77 Barry Egolf and #13 Tim Fahrner exiting turn 4 on the last lap, just in time to cross the finish line first. Egolf finished in a close second, Fahrner in third, #69 Mike Wade in fourth and #25 Dillion Lawrence in fifth.

#28 Jim Waters’ Focus Midget win tonight puts him just 8 points behind point leader #24 Chuck Groat. #89 Eric Barlow finished second tonight and currently sits third in points. Groat finished third, #15 Gregg Fuette finished in fourth and #74 J.R. Williams in fifth.

ASA Weekly Racing will continue at Rocky Mountain Raceways on Saturday, August 4 with Maverik Modifieds, Winged Sprints, Hornets, Figure-8 Cars and HR Equipment Figure-8 Trains. Gates open at 4:00pm, racing starts at 6:00pm.
