CARTHAGE, Tenn. (April 12, 2003) - Last Saturday night Riverview Speedway, 371 Dixon Springs Hwy in Carthage, hosted the 1st Annual “Al Menah Shriners, 100-Lap, Late Model Shootout”. The race was sponsored by Ward Construction of Westmoreland and it did not disappoint the large race crowd that was on hand. Jamie Summer, #46 of Franklin, KY, lead pole-to-pole to win the event. Earlier in the day Summers established a new track record during time trials of 10.56 seconds beating his old record that he set the Saturday night before.

Sixteen Late Models started the race but 3 fell out on the opening lap as car #82 Zach Neely spun out of control in turn 4 and ended up colliding with car #3, Billie Edwards. Unfortunately for Edwards it was the 2nd week in a row that she was taken out of a race by a car that had pun out in front of her leaving her no where to go. Car #5, Jim Tate, also fell out on lap #1 due to engine problems.

Earlier in the day car #55, James Climer, experienced engine problems during practice. Climer missed time trials as he and his crew had to pull the engine out of his car to work on it. As a result Climer had to start the race to the rear of the field.

After the race began Climer took advantage of the long 100-lap race and methodically worked his way up through the field. By lap number 55 Climer managed to pass #66 Duke Wright and pull into 2nd place. Climer could not catch the speedy Jamie Summers who cruised to a win finishing about a quarter-lap ahead of Climer who finished 2nd.

The real excitement of this race was the battle for 3rd and 4th place that took place during the latter half of the shootout. Car #66, Duke Wright and car #72, Jimmy Victory jockeyed back and forth and really put on a driving show. In the end it was Victory that finished 3rd and Wright 4th.

The Late Models were not the only big show Saturday as the Open Wheel Modifieds also put on a great race. For the second week in a row the race boiled down to #121 Wayne Jones against #211 Jimmy Victory who, once again, was pulling double duty by racing in two events. Earlier in the day during the Open Wheel Modified time trials Victory established a new track record in that division with a time of 11.04 seconds. In the race, however, it was Jones who took control early by jumping out in front. Many times during the race it looked like Victory was going to make a move on Jones and pass, but every time Jones managed to foil Victory’s attempts to pass. For the 2nd week in a row Jones finished 1st and Victory 2nd.

In other action Saturday night Jimmy Victory’s cousin, Daniel Victory won his 1st ever Sportsman Feature at Riverview Speedway; Nicholas Formosa won the River Runner Feature for the very first time; Ron Dodson won the very exciting Chevettes/Mini-Stocks Feature race; Bobby Joe Lane won the Nas-Kart trophy dash for the 2nd straight week; and John Summers won the Thunderstock trophy dash.

A bit of controversy surrounded the Mini-Cup Feature. Wayne White, #22 of Joelton, came from behind with just a few laps to go to win the race but was disqualified after the race in Tech as they found him to have an illegal motor. Tim Vinsant, who finished 2nd in the race, was then awarded first place.

This Saturday night Riverview Speedway does it again with gates opening at 2pm with racing at 6pm. This Saturday will be a regular program with the normal classes to include the Late Models, Sportsman, Thunderstocks, Open Wheel Modifieds, Mini-Cups, Chevettes, Mini-Stocks and River Runners.

On Saturday, April 26th Riverview Speedway will host their next special event as the Southern All-Stars Super Truck Series comes the Riverview for the very first time. We invite all the race fans in Middle Tennessee to come out for this historic event.
