Saturday, May 3, 2003 Summers wins Late Model feature at Riverview Speedway
by Race AuthorCARTHAGE, Tenn. -- Saturday night Jamie Summers of Franklin, KY capped an exciting night of racing at Riverview Speedway by winning the Late Model Feature. It was Summers 3rd Late Model win of the year, and first since the points series began. At the beginning of the race it was a battle between the pole sitters #72 Jimmy Victory and #98 Zach Taylor. After a few laps Taylor passed Victory for the lead and the 3rd place car, #80 Tony Formosa, passed Victory to move into 2nd. Summers then passed Victory and moved into 3rd. On lap #8 Formosa tried to dive down deep in the West Turn to pass Taylor but ended up tapping Taylor’s car, spinning him out. The yellow flag came out and Formosa was charged with the caution and had to restart on the rear. This put Summers into 2nd place. On the restart Summers quickly took control and passed Taylor to take the lead. Taylor’s car started to lose air pressure in the tires causing him to slow during the race. Kenny Wix, #1, and David Brown, #45, quickly overtook Taylor to move into 2nd and third respectively. Formosa would challenge the leaders once again before the race was over, but none could catch Summers, even after 3 more cautions tightened up the field before the race was over. Wix finished 2nd and Brown finished 3rd. One of the best races of the night belonged to the Amerigas Open Wheel Modifieds. Two weeks ago #47 John Thomas of Harvest, Alabama was involved in a major wreck in the Amerigas Open Wheel Modified Feature. Thomas sustained no broken bones but did severely pull and bruise some muscles. The week off due to last week’s Super Truck race was what Thomas needed as he barely won the Amerigas Open Wheel Modified Feature this past Saturday night. Thomas had been battling #211 Jimmy Victory (the same Victory who drives in the Late Models) the entire race. Many times it looked like Victory would pass Thomas on the outside, only to have Thomas hold him off. Then, on lap 28 of the 30-lap Feature, Victory finally got around Thomas and took the lead. On the final lap the two leaders approached a lapped car on the back straightaway. Victory was forced high and Thomas went low to avoid the lapped car. This put Thomas in position to be low into the East Turn and managed to pass Victory in the final turn and Thomas managed to beat Victory to the line to secure his first Amerigas Open Wheel Modified win of the year. Not to be outdone, the First Southern Financial Sportsman cars put on a great show of their own. During the first 12 laps of the race #68 Anthony Walker and #71 Daniel Victory (cousin to Jimmy Victory) jockeyed back and forth for the top spot. Their lead cars were constantly going two-wide through the turns. Following closely behind the leaders were #31 Dale Shoulders and #45 Scott Thompson who were also jockeying for 3rd and 4th place. On lap number 12 of the 20-lap Feature Walker and Victory bumped each other which sent the outside car, Victory, up into the wall in turn one. The impact with the wall was enough to put Victory out of the race. On the restart Shoulders quickly took to the offensive and passed Walker who would eventually fall out. Thompson fell into 2nd place and Brian Leyhew moved up into 3rd. Shoulders would hold on in the final 8 laps to secure the win. In other action Saturday night……#44 Gary Gore won the Tri-State Racing Equipment All-Fours Feature when the two leaders #11 James Mehaffey and #1x Kenny Wix took each other out on the final turn; #12 John Young of Hartsville won the 93rd consecutive running of the Citizen’s Bank Nas-Karts; and #5 Allen Ring of Columbia, TN won the Dwarf Car Feature. The Regina White, EA Tax Service Mini-Cups had some controversy once again. For the 2nd week in a row, and for the 3rd time in the last 4 weeks, #22 Wayne White won the race only to be disqualified in Tech after the race for having illegal engine parts. The 2nd place car, #14 Tim Vinsant, was found to be illegal as well. The 3rd place car, #121 Joseph Meyer, was given the win as he moved up to 1st. This Saturday night Riverview Speedway runs another night of its regular weekly racing program. Also this Saturday night during intermission, Riverview Speedway will be running bicycle races for the kids. All kids 13 and under with a one-speed bike can participate in the bicycle races. Gates open at 2pm with racing at 6pm. Visit the website at www.riverviewspeedway.com. Here are the results for the races held on Saturday, May 3rd, 2003:
