Riverview Speedway Park
Saturday, July 5, 2003 Taylor, Alexander, Jones and Victory big winners at Riverview Speedway
by Race AuthorCARTHAGE, Tenn. -- It was a night of big racing and big payouts at Riverview Speedway, 371 Dixon Springs Highway in Carthage, this past Saturday night. The biggest crowd of the year, to date, was on hand to watch the classes race for double points and to watch 4 of the 6 classes race for big money. In the Late Model division Mandy Moore made her 2003 Riverview Speedway debut, but no one could touch #98, Zach Taylor of Hartsville, as he led pole-to-pole and won his 2nd Late Model Feature of the season. There were plenty of position changes behind Taylor throughout the race. Duke Wright of Gallatin stayed on Taylor’s heels during the early part of the race, then on lap 16 got tangled up with Jamie Summers of Franklin, KY. Both cars were charged the caution and were sent to the rear. Jimmy Victory then chased Taylor around the track before Summers worked his way up through the field and retook 2nd place. Summers then ran out of race as Taylor cruised to the win. Summers lost 8 points to Taylor in the points race but Summers still leads with 16 scheduled races to go.
One of the best races of the night was the Amerigas Open Wheel Modified Feature. A record seven drivers from the great state of Alabama participated in the race. At one point, for 18 straight laps, the boys from Alabama held on to the top 5 positions before Jimmy Victory of Mt. Juliet took over 5th place from Jeff Letson of Huntsville. The final 10 laps of the race were as tight as any ever run at Riverview Speedway. The top 4 cars driven by Wayne Jones, John Thomas, Gary Finley and Roy Cantrell, all of Alabama, raced around the track in a tight formation with each car looking to make a move on the one in front. Wayne Jones managed to hang on and get the win holding off the others on the final lap. Jones has finished in the top 5 in every race so far this year at Riverview Speedway and has four 2nd place finishes but Saturday night was his first win of the season.
The First Southern Financial Sportsman cars had a big race this past Saturday with Thompson Mechanical of Castalian Springs putting up the addition prize money. Fifteen Sportsman cars took to the track for the big race. At the beginning of the Feature it was Dale Shoulders of Hartsville who took the early lead followed by Mike Mitchell of Hendersonville and Dan Victory of Smyrna. Victory, the First Southern Financial Sportsman points leader, quickly moved up through the field and passed Shoulders on lap 13 of the 30-lap Feature. Victory never looked back after that and won the race with Shoulders settling for 2nd place. The win was Victory’s 8th in a row in the division at Riverview Speedway, a Sportsman record, and it also ties the record held by John Young of Hartsville for the most consecutive wins in any division. Young won 8 straight Nas-Kart Features back in 2002.
The Regina White, EA Tax Service Mini-Cups ran the 2nd leg of the 4 race Tennessee State Championship Series sponsored by Grooms Engines of Nashville Saturday night. A record 18 cars started the race which was run relatively clean with no wrecks but there were a few spinouts. Clay Alexander, #84 of Franklin, TN, who won the 1st race of the series took the checkered, flag in race number two on Saturday. Alexander did not have an easy race this time around as several cars challenged for the lead during the feature. Most notable of the cars that challenged Alexander was car #10 driven by Jackie Miller of Coeburn, Virginia. On lap number 10 of the 50-lap race Miller shot up through the field systematically passing each car behind Alexander before settling into 2nd place. For the next ten laps Miller, the older veteran driver, tried in vain to pass Alexander, the young 12-year-old, but each time Alexander held him off. Finally Joseph Meyers and Anthony Warner would pass Miller sending him back into the pack. Alexander then went on to win the race and now has the inside track for the Tennessee State Championship with two races left in the series. Race number 3 will be held on Labor Day weekend and race number 4 will be held on Columbus Day weekend.
In other action Saturday night, Carl Bowling of Murfreesboro won the Citizen’s bank of Hartsville Nas-Kart Feature and Nicholas Formosa of Nashville won the Tri-State Racing Equipment Four Runners Feature.
Riverview Speedway will be racing again this Saturday night, July 12th. Riverview Speedway has moved back its starting times one-hour. For the remainder of the season gates will open on Saturdays at 3pm with racing at 7pm. Riverview Speedway still has its Friday afternoon open practice sessions that are free to the public from 1pm-dark.
