American Sprint Car Series Results from Hill Raceway, The
by Race Author
DELEVAN, N.Y. -- Two weeks ago, Chris Muhleisen handed over the lead to Chuck Hebing at The Hill Raceway; on Friday night at Freedom Raceway he would hold off Cobra thanks to the knowledge of his old stomping grounds and a little bit of help.
Muhleisen led all 20 laps from the pole position to win his third career Bobcat of Buffalo ASCS Patriot Sprint Group A-Main and his first in three years.
“This just feels awesome right now,” Muhleisen said in victory lane. “I was so close at The Hill and even though I wasn’t great tonight, it just worked.”
Muhleisen had to fend off outside polesitter Chuck Hebing for the first six laps but then caught a break when “Cobra” spun out in lapped traffic, resulting in a bent front axle when he made contact with Ray Preston. It was a major bullet dodged for Muhleisen, but not necessarily something he needed.
“I would have loved to run Chuck to the end of the race,” said the Belmont, NY, driver. “He was all over me and he’s been running so good so I would have liked to get him back for two weeks ago.”
“The Copper Chopper” started his sprint car career at Freedom, winning six feature events when the 1/3-mile ran sprint cars weekly. After winning two races on tour with the Patriots in 2003, he fell into a winless drought that lasted until Friday Night.
After Chris’s wife pulled a dead-last starting spot for his heat, the driver of the No. 10M knew he’d need to move up into at least the top four in heat one to get into the redraw. In a caution-free event, Muhleisen was able to move up from eighth to finish in second, easily landing him on the pole.
Ray Preston inherited second on lap six after the Hebing spin and did not show any ill effects of the contact with the No. 45, keeping Muhleisen close-in-tow for the remainder of the race to pick up his best finish of the season.
Rick Wilson started 12th because of missing the prior race, but the winner of heat two stuck to the top-side of the track to run up to a third place finish, his first top five with the Patriots this year.
Wilson’s protégé, Nick Bashford, had another solid run by moving up into the top five to bring home his No. 24x in fourth. Chris Shuttleworth rounded out the top five.
Don Adamczyk continued his streak of top ten finishes with a sixth place run, just ahead of Mike Stelter, who won heat three but could not move up in the feature. Bryan Howland had to start back in the pack after a poor heat race but was able to salvage an eighth place finish. Brad Knab and Gary Troutman rounded out the top ten.
Two scary moments took place on Bobcat of Buffalo Night at Freedom Raceway. Rob Pietz’s No. 69 caught on fire in heat race three and spread onto his driver’s suit, forcing Pietz to put it out himself after jumping out of the car.
The other frightening incident took place on lap 14 of the feature when Rich Swarthout's birthday celebration took a downward turn as he flipped over the wall in turn three. The winner of heat one and winner of the Slocum Milk Hauling Dash for Cash had moved up to sixth, but got tangled up with a lapped car and was launched off of the racetrack. After taking a hard tumble, Swarthout was taken to the hospital for precautionary measures.
In all, 24 cars were in attendance for the sixth race of the 2006 Bobcat of Buffalo ASCS Patriot Sprint Group season. Daryl Turford, Stan Zanchin, Tim Zimbardi and Keith Dempster made their first starts of the season with PSG to kick off a two-race weekend for the 360 sprinters.
