Figure 8 Racing Goes Backwards on Saturday Night at the Speedrome

Digg this story  Post to delicious

INDIANAPOLIS -- Saturday July 7th will be another historical evening at the Bryant Heating & Cooling Systems Indianapolis Speedrome. Not 1, not 2, but 3 Figure 8 main events will run in the opposite direction for the first time in the track's 71-year history. Testing the dangerous crossover are the Joe's Value Construction Late Models, Stocks, and Hornets. The oval will be a busy place too on Saturday. The Circle City Pyrotechnics Junior Faskarts, Junior Hornets, Roadrunners, and Hornets speed around the one-fifth mile course. Fans get a full plate of racing with the first green flag waving at 7:30pm.

Running in the opposite (backwards) Figure 8 direction is a rare, but fairly new occurrence at the World's Home of the Figure 8. The initial happening came in a one-time only event called the Double Trouble 100 on September 27, 2008. That was a postseason "big tire" race which started in the standard direction for 50-laps then a halftime break. Then remaining 50 were ran backwards with Mark Tunny taking the honors and spot in the record books. The race was not only packed with great action, but the uniqueness of competing in the opposite direction was the buzz of the fans.

The next time any class ran the reverse route was for the first-time during the point season for the Joe's Value Construction Late Models. The date was May 30, 2009 and the event was the Triple Crown Figure 8 Championship. The series had time trials on this course for the only time in Speedrome history. Thus 1994 track champion Rodney Sizemore established a new track record with a lap of 17.217 seconds. A 25-lap main event, race #1 of the Triple Crown, was the test for these drivers. Once again the opposite direction clash had Mark Tunny hoisting the checkered flag.

The most recent backwards competition came on November 6, 2011 in a non-points World Figure 8 Tour sanctioned race. Ben Tunny was the winner of this 25-lapper to kept the family name's record perfect. Saturday July 7th will be the inaugural time for the Stock and Hornet divisions to venture onto the backwards Figure 8 course. The record books will add a few more pages after this affair. The Stocks also have qualifications on the agenda which will establish a new track record time for the class in this configuration. This tripleheader of crossover action will be a night to remember.
