Friday, July 20, 2012 Speedrome Had Hot Racing and Cooler Temperatures on Friday Night July 20

INDIANAPOLIS -- Mother Nature gave the fans and racers a bit of a break on Friday evening July 20th at the Bryant Heating and Cooling Indianapolis Speedrome. The stifling temperatures were on vacation, but that didn't stop the steamy motorsports action held on this Fast Friday showcase. Taking the green flag were the Circle City Pyrotechnics Junior Faskarts, Hornets, Junior Hornets, and Hornet Figure 8's. The program in addition hosted the USSA Mel Kenyon Midgets and the INEX Legends. There was something for everyone on this initial event of Hall of Fame weekend at the Speedrome.
The Circle City Pyrotechnics Junior Faskarts thundered into round two of the Chase for the Cup championship playoff with an extremely tight title battle. Preliminary heat one saw Levei Hargraves taking his second season win over Caitlyn Wolfe and Dustin Kares. Heat two had fourth-generation driver Kimmie Greig victorious besting James Rybolt and Brayde Harper. The 20-lap feature got underway with Rybolt bounding to the top spot. Greig soon joined James and the pair battled for a big chunk of the middle segment. Kimmie eventually got around and gapped the pack a bit to claim her third feature victory in the last four events. James was a career best runner-up with Quentin White third after arriving at the track just minutes before the green flag.
The Hornets were on hand to hit the oval and Figure 8 courses, a tradition on this Fast Friday program. The oval heat saw 'Superman' Robby Mink Jr carrying checkers beating Jeffrey Allen Smith and Don VanValkenburg III for the win. The Figure 8 heat clash had a familiar ring to it with Don finishing on top. Robby was second with Jeff third. The 20-lap left-hand-turn-only main event had Jim Bullock heeding the initial advantage. Mink roared by soon after and was joined a few circuits later by dad Rob Mink Sr. And that is how the family finished with Junior getting his second victory of 2012. Chip Branham came home third. The daunting Figure 8 feature saw VanValkenburg rally late to return to victory lane after a tough previous week. Mink Jr missed the evening sweep by 1 spot with Smith also on the podium.
The Junior Hornets were out for a spin around the famous fifth-mile for a July championship point's event. The opening test for the racers ages 12-16 came via an 8-lap preliminary contest. Trucker Justin Green was the winner besting Andrew Teepe, Jacob Brown, and Layne Pulliam. Feature time came with Roadrunner convert Brown hauling off to the early lead. The race continued with an amazing runner-up duel between Green and Teepe. For nearly a dozen laps they went side-by-side showing superior skill from both wheelmen. And this all while running inches off Jacob's back bumper. Brown was able to stay ahead for his first win of any kind at the Speedrome. It was a very happy victory lane as he celebrated with his grandpa. Contact on the final orbit sent point leader Andrew to finish second with Justin third.
