Saturday, June 30, 2012 Billet Claims Summer Fun/21a Memorial Championship at SSP on Saturday Night
by Todd FisherNEWBERRYTOWN, Pa. -- Dover's Chase Billet won the 30-lap Late Model feature event as part of the 7th annual Summer Fun Championships on Saturday Night at the Susquehanna Speedway Park. Billet collected $1,200 for the win with extra money added to the top spot as part of the 21a Memorial Championships honoring the late Mike Zeigler Sr. Jasen Geesaman of Lebanon won an exciting 25-lap Street Stock feature and collected $900 for the victory. Patrick McClane of York won his first 20-lap Xtreme Stock Car feature of the season. York Haven's Daryl Sipe won the Road Warrior 15-lapper for his fifth victory of the year.
The 30-lap Late Model feature began with Randy Christine Jr. blasting into the lead from a third place starting spot. Christine set the pace for the first nine laps until Chase Billet made the pass for the lead on the tenth circuit. On lap 12, Billet continued to lead as his uncle, Carl Billet moved in on his rear bumper and began challenging for the lead. The elder Billet tried everything he could to make the pass for the win. Over the waning stages of the race, Carl ran side-by-side with Chase edging him at the line on every lap. On the final circuit, Chase took the victory over 'Uncle' Carl by a car length to collect the $1,200 pay day. J.R. Rodriguez finished strong in third, followed by Christine Jr. in fourth. John Moser Jr. finished fifth and claimed $50.00 as the JR's Paving Hard Charger award after starting the race in fifteenth. Carl Billet, Chase Billet and Christine Jr. were the heat race victors. John Baker was the consolation race winner.
From the front row, Jasen Geesaman took the early lead of the Street Stock 25-lapper Championship event. Geesaman held off challenges from Scott Thunberg and Randy Zechman lap-after-lap to retain the lead. A late race restart gave Thunberg and Zechman one more shot at Geesaman. Coming off turn four of the final lap, all three drivers went for the win with Geesaman taking the checkers by inches over Thunberg. Zechman was squeezed out at the end and settled for third. Mike Zeigler Jr. finished fourth with David Latsha rounding out the top five. Brandin Ort won the Zeigler Jr. Memorial Hard Charger finishing sixth after starting in the 14th starting spot. Latshaw and Thunberg were heat race winners.
In the 20-lap Xtreme Stock Car feature event, Patrick McClane took the lead on the start from a third place starting spot. McClane never faltered and held on for his first victory of the season over Tim Hahn. Johnny Palm finished third with Adam Smith in fourth. Donnie Broderick was the Madison House Hard Charger by going from a 10th place starting spot to finish fifth in the feature event. Heat races were claimed by Benyou and Smith.
In the 15-lap Road Warrior feature, Daryl Sipe took the lead on the start and sailed to his fifth win of the season edging out Christopher Holland by two car lengths. Dennis Dorosz finished in the third spot followed by Thomas Thompson in fourth. Michael Wityk rounded out the top five. Greg Zelinsky and Sipe won their respective heat races.
