Racing Returns to the Kutztown Fair Speedway this Wednesday
by Barry Angstadt
KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Following its annual two-week hiatus, the volume control and speed dial get cranked up to full blast once again as the Kutztown Fair Speedway swings back into action this Wednesday, July 11. Just six weeks (eight nights) of midweek mayhem remain in the 2012 racing season at the fairgrounds, and a big second half is planned at the one-fifth mile oval.
This Wednesday, July 11, the four weekly divisions will toss some clay as the Wingless 600cc and winged 270cc Sprints do battle along with the All Star Slingshots and the Xcel Sportsman Modifieds. The All Star Slingshots, sponsored all season long by Wert's Beverage of Topton, Pa., will compete for a $300 top prize, regardless of car count. The Slingers have been averaging close to 30 cars per race this season, so car count should not be an issue...but trying to qualify for that $300 winner's payout will be a big issue, making the heat races even more exciting and meaningful.
Gates open at 4 p.m. Warm-ups are scheduled for 6:30, and the first heat race goes green at 7:00. All four feature races will be contested over a distance of 20 laps.
This Wednesday is also Checkered Flag Fan Club Night at the speedway, giving fans and racers alike the opportunity to join one of the oldest, most prestigious fan clubs in the nation. The CFFC's Injured Drivers Fund benefits drivers, crew members, and officials who are injured at the race track. Even the famous "Super Tex", A.J. Foyt, once benefitted from the Injured Drivers Fund of the CFFC.
The four weekly divisions will compete again on July 18, when they'll be joined by the Junior Slingshots. The Junior Slingers will make their third appearance of 2012 at Kutztown and compete in a "feature only" format.
The WIX Filters 100 Nights of Racing will make a stop at the fairgrounds on July 25. The folks at WIX Filters will provide lots of giveaway items for the fans as well as special prizes for each of the feature winners on the 25th of July.
Coming up on August 1st, the All Star Slingshots will take part in the second annual NAPA Dutch Classic, a 30-lap National Slingshot Tour event. Supported by the area's NAPA Auto Parts Stores, the Dutch Classic is a high-paying tour race for the region's Slinger pilots, awarding those all-important National touring points as well as cash. The rain date for the Dutch Classic is August 8.
Joining the Slingshots on Dutch Classic night will be the Wingless 600cc and winged 270cc Sprints, along with the Xcel Sportsman Modifieds.
August 8 will be the final points race for the 600cc and 270cc Sprints.
The annual Kutztown Fair Week Races will take center stage from August 14th through the 16th, with a little different format penciled in for this year's season ending events.
Tuesday, August 14, will feature the Kutztown Fair Week Nationals for the winged 270cc Sprints. The winged warriors will compete in time trials, a dual heat race format utilizing passing points, last-chance qualifiers, and a 30-lap A-Main.
Tuesday's menu will also consist of a Junior Slingshot National event (time trials, dual heat races, and a 25-lap feature) and the final point race of the season for the Xcel Sportsman Modifieds.
On Wednesday, August 15, Night #2 of the Fair Week Nationals will spotlight the Wingless 600cc Sprints. Their race format will mirror that of the 270's, with a 30-lap A-Main highlighting the evening's agenda.
Also on Wednesday, the Wert's Beverage All Star Slingshots will take part in their final point race of the season, and the Xcel 600cc Modified Tour visits the fairgrounds with an event run in memory of Leon Gruber that will pay $1,000 to the winner.
Thursday, August 16, will be used as a rain date for either of the two programs mentioned above. Thursday is also being designated as "A Night With the Quarter Midgets", putting the young racing stars of tomorrow on the clay oval at the Kutztown Fair.
The point chases are still very tight in all four classes, with each of the championship honors very much up for grabs.
In the Wingless 600cc Sprint Class, Coopersburg's Rick Perone leads two-time and defending point king Jeff Hartman by just 11 points. Positions three through eight are separated by 54 points with six races left to run.
Kutztown's own Jarid Kunkle leads the winged 270cc Sprint standings. Kunkle takes a 48 point advantage over Nazareth's Jon Pepe into the second half of the 2012 campaign, which begins this Wednesday at the fairgrounds.
With his victory on June 20, Oley's Brett Bieber vaulted to the top of the Wert's Beverage All Star Slingshot point parade. The defending National Slingshot Champion now leads Matt Mertz by 33 points, with a mere 14 tallies separating third place Jim Housworth from seventh place Danny Buccafusca.
Factor X Grafix is sponsoring a very lucrative point fund for the Xcel Sportsman Modifieds at Kutztown this season, and one-time feature winner Richie Hitzler holds a 30 point bulge over Eric Whitby in the battle for the big bucks.
Justin Schraden, a feature winner earlier in the season, is a close third in the standings, with Ryan Suchon, opening night winner Jordan Dreher, and Andy Ressler still very much in the mix for the point title.
Beginning this Wednesday, July 11, the stakes are high and the excitement is back, as the Kutztown Fair Speedway happily provides your Midweek Motorsports Adrenaline Rush!
