Deerfield Raceway Hosted Cashland Night at the Races, Record Setting Feature Event

DEERFIELD, Ohio -- Deerfield Raceway Hosted Cashland Night at the races and in a record setting feature event Bob Robertson of Sarver, PA in the MrBail.com Micro Sprint Division claimed his first Deerfield victory. This fifteen lap race ran flag to flag in an amazing six minutes. Robertson led the race by making fifteen perfect laps. Deerfield hero Mike Himes, Somerset PA, passed 2006 Rookie of the Year Brett Garrett on lap two and shadowed Robertson’s tire tracks waiting for a mistake. Robertson has raced at the field for years and has always been quick but victory has eluded him due to crashes or mechanical failures. This night Robertson was on top of his game and would not be denied. Himes ended the race second and Brett Garrett, New Middleton, claimed the third position in this highly competitive division. Mike Crane, Cabot, PA, grabbed the fourth slot for another top five entered in his log book. Last week’s feature winner JJ Lute got past Deerfield regular Mike Borawiec, Newton Falls OH and Sam Carpenter out of Lisbon to claim the coveted fifth place position. Heats went to Borawiec and Himes. Feature – Robertson, Himes, Garrett, Crane, Lute, Borawiec, S. Carpenter, George Hobaugh, Chad Carpenter, Greg Lazzara, JC Hay, Dave Lazzara, Jeff Walker, Michael Kerr, Chris Plascak, Shawn Hubler, Tim Eakin – DNS.

In the Wally Armour Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep Mod Lite division, Chris Logan of Ravenna won the big race of the night. Logan, former Hoosier Tire Point Champ led every lap until lap twelve, when he was passed by Anthony Gillespie of Warren. Gillespie received a weight infraction at post race inspection giving Logan the win. In the early laps of the race Logan was sailing when on lap ten the caution flew and the field was bunched up, which allowed Gillespie to close in on the real estate he couldn’t make up before. Kevin Nicolino of Deerfield ran great all night claiming a second place finish and winning his heat race. Ending third Jay Dye, current point leader, of Newton Falls, slid under Paul Miller Jr. as Miller sized up Nicolino for a last lap pass. Miller claimed fourth and also took the second heat of two mod lite heats. Bud Watson, Conneaut, OH, last week’s feature winner, rounded out the top five. Bud Watson Claimed the Hard Charger award. The Maddies Pizza and Restaurant Sportsman division main saw a brand new winner this July Saturday night. Tony Swierz of Deerfield put one in the record books. Swierz passed Kyle Lawerence of Ravenna on lap two then on lap eight powered past former feature winner Art Williams and 2006 Hoosier Tire Point Champ Steve Mix. Swierz hugged the bottom once in the lead to assure his victory and that he did. Multiple ’07 feature winner Ed Bixler of Ravenna advanced seven positions to finish behind Swierz. Art Williams of Leavittsburg ended the race third for another great finish. Steve Mix of Kensington claimed fourth and Anthony Gillespie of Warren doing double duty also driving a Mod Lite grabbed the fifth spot. Heats went to Chris Whan, Todd Rhoads, Swierz. Joe Woodarski Cornwell Tool Hard Charger went to Steve Mix Jr. advancing eight. Feature – Swierz, Bixler, A. Williams, Mix Sr., Gillespie, Mix Jr., Larry Rhoads, Charlie Campbell, Whan, T. Rhoads, Jeff Eboch, Ken Platt, John Smitty, Donald Lawver, Lawerence, Greg Davis, John Lutton, Ted Williams, Mark Finch, Ray Gregory, Sonny Huff, Jason Myers DNS

James Gatto of Berlin Center continued his dominance in the Cashland X-treme Pro division, winning another feature event, after starting last. Neighbor Ray Soos grabbed second, and Alliance native Joe Hoy, former feature winner finished in the third position. David Hoy also of Alliance ended the race fourth from a good finish and Chuck Hutchinson, Louisville, completed the top five. Len Lurch of Berlin Center finished sixth. Dave Mayfield DNS. The always exciting Mel’s Towing Compact division proved to the crowd that tonight would be no different. Shaun Loy of Alliance led the first eight laps of this feature event. Chuck Magrell of Atwater passed Loy on lap eleven to take the lead and eventual victory. This is Magrells’ second feature win of the ’07 season. Rich Hartzell of Berlin Center, 2006 Hoosier Tire Point Champ, ended the race second coming from the seventh slot. John Stamm of Southington, OH finished the big event third and Loy grabbed the fourth spot. Kyle Cagle of Rootstown rounded out the top five in this fourteen car field. Heats went to Hartzell and Gene Buck. Joe Woodarski Cornwell Tool Hard Charger award went to Fred Bays of East Canton advancing six. Feature – Magrell, Hartzell, Stamm, Loy, K. Cagle, Chris Cagle, Jason Miller, Fred Bays, Scott Andrews, Liz Graham, Mike Wilson, Steve Loy, Johnny Hughes, Gene Buck

In the fan favorite Kid’s Kart division Casey Porter of Warren found himself in the winners circle once again. Porter came from the eighth spot to take over the top spot on lap eleven. Cody Dye of Newton Falls who started in the back of this feature event and shadowed Porter to the front ended the race second. Rookie Chelsea Magrell of Atwater captured third place for her best finish of the year. Jade Rosen of Youngstown, OH claimed the fourth spot for another top five finish. Jeff Haefke of Berlin Center, rounded out the top five for a great finish. Chas Wolbert of Warren took sixth and Brandon Smith, Leetonia, OH 2006 Hoosier Tire Point Champ grabbed seventh. Eighth spot went to Rookie Alexis Werschey of Ravenna and ninth to Cameron Nastasi of Youngstown OH. Heat went to Dye.
