Friday, June 12, 2009 Markham and Anderson Secure First Wins at Hilltop; Morehouse, Parks and Craver Add More Wins
by Mike SwangerMILLERSBURG, Ohio -- Close racing continues to be the storyline at Hilltop Speedway on Friday nights as close finishes and last lap passes seem to be the norm at the track where action is the attraction. Brad Malcuit started the S & S Construction super late model feature on the pole after his dash win and looked to have the feature in hand for the first nine laps. Going into turn one on the 10th lap, Malcuit slipped high and made contact with the wall and that allowed Ashland's Ryan Markham to power past with Lance Elson following. Justin Chance took over third on the next circuit as Dave Hornikel would slip past the fading Malcuit two laps later for the top five at the time. Quick timer Markham and his Stu's Place #5m would start to open up a lead as Chance pulled past Elson on lap 14 and set sail for Markham and with 2 laps to go had caught Markham and as the checkered flew, Markham had less than a car length lead for the win. Hornikel, the heat winner, took third ahead of Elson with Chester Elliott locking up fifth.
Hanover's Kevin Morehouse led all the way in the Tri-State Modified main but it was not easy as early on fast qualifier and dash winner Norm Aronhalt and Mark Gardiner had the heat on high for Morehouse and then in the middle part of the race, Larry Kugal moved into second to intensify the pressure on Morehouse but there was no stopping the Morehouse Logging #28 from parking in victory circle for the fourth time this year. Aronhalt ran third with first heat winner Kyle Brown fourth followed by Gardiner. Nick Smith was the other heat winner as Matt Samples collected the last chance checker flag.
Troy Anderson of Lodi fought off Brandon Gardner and Roger Drouhard for his first Snyder Brothers pure stock feature. Gardner passed Anderson for the lead on lap 6 when he slipped high, but the Ton of Parts #41 of Anderson quickly recovered on the next circuit to regain the point. With four laps to go, Drouhard scooted past Gardner for second as Jimmy Smith and Kevin Facemire filled out the top five. Anderson and Gardner topped the heat races.
Zach Foss started on the pole of the Holmes Tire mini stock feature but as each lap wore on, he felt the pressure of Coshocton's Andy Parks and on lap eight, the Holmes Tire sponsored #ez1 moved into the lead position and go on to win his fifth feature of the season. Rounding out the top five behind heat winner Foss were Darrick Reed, CJ Crossen and Blain Markey.
The Circle Track mini trucks feature saw Navarre's Brandon Craver and his Thrifty Muffler #771 cruise to his fourth win but the battle for a top five finish was a wild one. After second running Jerry Gardner dropped out with mechanical woes on lap seven, Scott Gray battled off Dale Mong and Tom Garlick for second through fourth as it was truck bed to truck bed action between Ken Duncan and Jesse Combs for fifth with Duncan edging ahead at the line. Heat winners were Craver and Mitch Caskey.
Lots of action at Hilltop this week with all five classes in action Friday, June 19th for a Father's Night special with all men over 18 getting in for just $5.00, then on Tuesday, June 23, the O'Reilly's All Star Circuit of Champions Sprint Speedweek rolls in for a $5,000 to win show along with the Tri-State Modifieds chasing after the $1,200 to win money. Action starts both nights at 8 p.m.
