Saturday, July 5, 2008 Carrier Battles the Elements to Win MACS ‘Pepsi 75’ at Portsmouth Raceway Park
by Jeff GeeseyPORTSMOUTH, Ohio -- It has been four years since the ‘Salt Rock Express’ Eddie Carrier Jr. has found victory lane with the Mid-Atlantic Championship Series and south-central Ohio seems to be where Carrier Jr., enjoys making his noise. Eddie’s last MACS A-Main win came in September of 2004 at KC Raceway in Chillicothe, OH, this time it was the Coleman Family’s Portsmouth Raceway Park in Portsmouth, OH, a mere 30 miles south of the home of the Dirt Track World Championship where Carrier Jr., picked up $10,000 and his second career MACS win in the ‘Pepsi 75’.
Gettysburg, PA’s Jeremy Miller along with Josh McGuire in the Stephens Motorsports #34 led the stout 24 car field to the green with Miller grabbing the advantage going into the first corner with Carrier Jr. falling into the third spot ahead of 2007 World of Outlaws Series Champion Steve Francis who was in the Tim Logan owned #11. Racing was halted quickly though as 2008 MACS AlturnaMATS Rookie of the Year candidate Greg Fetters made heavy contact with Doug Drown and Audie Swartz.
On the ensuing ‘Delaware Style’ restart Miller still led with McGuire pressuring the Pennsylvania ‘Hot-Shoe’. Josh took the lead at the stripe on lap three but Jeremy battled back regain the lead as Carrier Jr. found a groove he liked on the outside of the 3/8’s high-banked clay mile oval. Eddie made his way around McGuire for second before lap eight caution for Ben Adkins who came to a stop in turn four.
When action resumed it was Miller fending off challenges from Carrier Jr., the 2006 World of Outlaws Late Model Series Rookie of the Year. Jeremy could only fend of Eddie until lap 13 when Carrier Jr. blew around the outside of Miller to take the lead. Miller would unfortunately became the Chase Decals ‘Hard Luck’ Driver on lap 17 as his Buckler Motorsports, Complete Flooring Rocket Chassis slowed to a grinding halt bring out the events fifth caution.
Carrier Jr. stayed the course for the next several laps as many drivers were making advances to the front. Josh Richards, the 2005 World of Outlaws Late Model Series Rookie of the Year, was driving the Ernie Davis owned #25 Rocket Chassis had begun to battle McGuire for the second spot when the two made contact down the backstretch sending ‘Kid Rocket’ into a spin going into turn three collecting Francis, Matt Miller, and Jackson, OH’s Jason Montgomery to bring out the events eighth and final caution on lap 27.
A light fog and rolled into the area and as the race went on the fog became thicker making it somewhat difficult for drivers with no tear-offs on their helmets to see. During the lengthy caution to clean up the lap 27 accident, MACS officials red flagged the event to allow crews to put tear-offs on their helmets.
After the short red flag period in which the second place car of Josh McGuire had to pit with a flat right rear tire moving two time and defending MACS champion into second it was still Carrier Jr. in total control. Covert showed his nose to Eddie on the first few circuits after the red flag but was never able to completely pull up along side to make a move. The rest of the event was caution free as Carrier Jr. crossed the finish line ahead of Covert, Donnie Moran in third, Doug Horton, and Eric Wells in fifth. The second tier of drivers was led by 2005 MACS Champion Mike Balzano in sixth, R.J. Conley in seventh, Coleby Frye and Delmas Conley in eighth and ninth respectively and 2002 MACS Champion Jack Pencil rounding out the top ten.
