Saturday, June 27, 2009 Skyline Wins go to Baxter and Swartz; Powell Pure Stock King
by Scott WolfeSTEWART, Ohio -- Surviving a 6 p.m. downpour, Skyline Speedway took some time to get the track prepared, but the end result was one fast race track. One-hundred thirty cars packed the pits for what proved to be a super, wicked-fast night of racing. Albany, Ohio's John Powell, Jr. known to many as "Lil Hip" claimed the dramatic win in the $1,000 Pure Stock Invitational. Minford, Ohio's Audie Swartz bested the 36 car Late Model field, Keith Baxter, Chillicothe, Ohio, claimed the 410 Outlaw Sprint main, and Jeremy Berwanger (Murray City) took the Malta AMRA Modified main. Portland's Dennis Adkins claimed the 4-Cylinder win and Kyle Bond bested the Mini-Wedges.
Gary Gould grabbed the early lead in the Pure Stock Invitational, while a three-wide battle between Jeremy Misel, Bobby Lilly, and Brian Schaffer evolved for second. Lilly was cited for a caution after contact with Misel and there he began a charge from the tail.
Anxious for the big pay-off, Misel, John Powell, Danny Talbott and Ryan Wilson went four-wide coming out of two with Talbott making contact with Gould for the race's third caution. Gould resumed the lead as the 13th circuit unfolded and Talbott went pitside with a flat right rear. Barry Brisker, Tommy Murphy, Randy Bohan, and George Klintworth worked their way into the hunt.
Wilson took the lead on the restart with John Powell in tow to challenge the last several laps. With three laps to go Powell took the lead and marched on to the win. Wilson anchored down second ahead of Brisker, Misel, Klintworth, Anthony, Bohan, Lilly, Gould, and Murphy. Powell was also the hard charger of the race in a 7th to first run.
Pole-sitter Fast Freddie Staats led the initial go in the 410 sprint main before a spinning Jordan Harble brought out the 1st caution. Staats again jumped out in front for the next seven laps. Davis had his hands full of Jimmy Stinson for the next six circuits in defending his right to second, while Dave Dickson rocketed from the fourth row to fourth, pulling along-side the two front-runners.
On the eighth circuit, heartbreak-city cried out for Staats who clipped the spinning car of Jordan Harble. Out of control and now without brakes, Staats' crippled car nearly went into the infield pond. Davis began to pull away on the restart, while Dickson battled Stinson for second. Keith Baxter moved into a top six behind Aaron Higgins after a 13th place start.
Baxter continued his fast-forward run, first claiming second over Stinson, then making a staggering pass of the talented Davis for first. Stinson then began to tighten the line and reel in Baxter as lapped traffic became a huge factor. Baxter used a pick-of-a lapped car to hold off Stinson's charge, while "Fine Wine" Dickson made a last lap pass of Davis for third. Higgins was fifth ahead of Brian Benson, Mitchell Harble, Alec Martin, Kory Crabtree, and Luke Hall. The win was Baxter's second straight Skyline triumph and only the 4th time out for his car this season. He was also the hard charger in an 13th to 1st place run.
Audie Swartz led the first lap of the Late Model main after jumping ahead of pole-sitters Ron Mayle and Billy Holbert. Swartz led the first seven laps before Mayle went spinning into the infield mud. Chris Carpenter bolted by both Mayle and Chris Garnes on the high side, while the bottom-riding Swartz continued his crusade.
Andy Bond, Larry Bond, and Dan Morrison had an ongoing battle after slipping by Dan Shrigley. Garnes momentarily moved by Carpenter for second, but Carpenter regained momentum to retake the position. Shrigley moved high to hold off Corey Conley and pass Bond about midway, as Travis Brookover fought for a top five.
Swartz had the field covered, but the barnstorming drive for second between the "Chris and Chris Express" caught everyone's attention. Carpenter held on for the spot.
Audie Swartz, Chris Carpenter, Chris Garnes, Travis Brookover, Andy Bond, Larry Bond, Corey Conley, Dan Shrigley, Steve Bigley, and Tony Roush. Brookover and Conley were hard chargers of the race, each picking up 7 positions.
Mike McPherson and Kenny Johnson paced the field to the start of the Malta AMRA Modified main, but when the first lap unfolded Jeremy Berwanger's first lap pass gave him the stronghold on the top spot.
After a lap five caution, Berwanger blasted off the launch pad for another big lead. Kenny Johnson put his #23 on the high side in pursuit of the "Flying 44" of Berwanger. Just off a successful trip to Virginia where he won Back-to-back features, Berwanger continued his surge. Jeremy Blake bagged Johnson for second, while Johnson now led a torrid charge of McPherson, Kenny Riddle and Eric Sheppard.
Blake hung with Berwanger for a while, but at the finish the Murray City Bandit stole the cash.
Rounding out the top ten behind Berwanger were Blake, Johnson, Riddle, McPherson, Eric Sheppard, Dusty Boley, Doug Henry, Del Cunningham, and Roger Shadwick.
The mighty Four Cylinders welcomed home Dennis Adkins, but the welcoming party invited cousin Eugene Grumpy Adkins to the family reunion. "Grump" sat up on the wheel, but his kin Dennis proved to be the class of the field in an Adkins-Adkins one-two finish. Shawn McClain was right there the entire distance, but couldn't get the need break and had to settle for third ahead of Donnie Bartlett, Tony Plaugher, Greg King, David Banks, Jeff Rankin, George Klintworth, John Bartlett, and Josh Salyers.
Kyle Bond claimed his 3rd Mini-Wedge feature of the year. Rounding out the top ten were Will Holland, Ron Pickens, Cameron Roush, Abby White, Martin Gibson, Tiffany Jackson, and Samantha Roush.
Skyline Speedway continues action next Friday night July 3 for the Greg Schilling Memorial. For further information visit www.skylinespeedway.net or call 304-539-4410 or the track phone at 740-662-4111.
