Lowe’s Motor Speedway
Friday, April 14, 2006 News from Lowe’s Motor Speedway
by Race AuthorHUNTERSVILLE, N.C. -- It is uncommon for amateur racers to compete against racing stars, but Endurance Karting will make that happen April 29 at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord. NASCAR drivers Ernie Irvan and Jerry Nadeau are scheduled to compete in the day's six-hour endurance event. The race will benefit Race2Safety, an organization founded by Irvan to generate awareness of transportation-related head injuries and promote activities to reduce the occurrences of such trauma. "It is an honor to have two very talented racers compete with us in one of our toughest events of the season," said Johan Schwartz, president of Endurance Karting. "To have this event benefit Ernie's organization, Race2Safety, makes it that much more special." During his 13-year career in the NASCAR Winston (now NEXTEL) Cup Series, Irvan captured 15 victories, which include victories in the prestigious Daytona 500. The California native accumulated 68 top-five finishes and 124 top-10 finishes in 313 career starts. Danbury, Conn., native Jerry Nadeau garnered one win, nine top-five finishes and 19 top-10 finishes in 177 starts in NASCARs premier series. The weekend begins April 28 with a Race School, in which inexperienced drivers can learn more about endurance go-kart racing. This fun and comprehensive school begins with registration at 7:30 a.m., and is limited to 20 participants. Registration for Saturdays six-hour event to benefit Race2Safety begins at 7 a.m., with the green flag waving at 10:30 a.m. The race will challenge drivers' endurance and strategy skills, as 15 pit stops per team must be made during the event. On Sunday, April 30, Endurance Karting will return to the track for a 1.5-hour race and a Super Race Combo, a grueling racing challenge for its most experienced racers.
