Tuesday, July 21, 2009 Rain Couldn't Dampen Round Seven of the Summer Shootout Series
by Scott CooperCONCORD, N.C. -- It was raining and pouring, but no one was snoring as the crowd witnessed some of the best racing action of the season during round seven of the Summer Shootout Series at Lowe's Motor Speedway. Daniel Hemrick, Scott Hensley and Matthew Linker were among Tuesday night's feature winners.
Hemrick came into the night leading the Bath Fitter Legends Car Pro division point standings and boosted his chances to win the championship by scoring his third victory of the season.
After starting the race from sixth position, Hemrick quickly made his way toward the front. The Kannapolis, N.C., resident closed in on pole-sitter Ronnie Basset Jr., before completing a Lap 10 pass for the lead.
Hemrick stretched his advantage over the field, while John Freeman and Austin Hill also passed Basset. Hemrick crossed the finish line with a comfortable lead followed by Freeman in second and Hill in third.
A torrential downpour during the Legends Car Young Lions 20-lap feature produced tricky track conditions as Scott Hensley claimed the victory.
Hensley, of Olive Branch, Miss., first took the lead on Lap 4 after Travis Braden hydroplaned though the grass coming to the stripe. Braden retook the lead on Lap 12, but a tangle with slower traffic on Lap 14 sent him to the tail end of the longest line, relinquishing the lead to Hensley. After an intense restart, Hensley held on to win his third race of the season.
Chad Finchum followed closely behind in the second position, while Justin Grimes finished third.
Linker, of Mount Pleasant, N.C., came out on top in the Bandolero Young Guns/Outlaw feature, but not before a fierce battle with championship contenders Justin Carroll and Austin Langenstein.
Langenstein started third but quickly took the lead, where he remained until Carroll slid passed on Lap 7, a move that also opened the door for Linker to take the second position.
Carroll remained in front until a side-by-side battle on Lap 15 where Linker took the lead coming off the fourth turn. Carroll challenged Linker multiple times in the closing laps, but was unsuccessful as Linker drove on to claim his third victory of the year.
Carroll crossed the line in second and Langenstein settled for third in the 20-lap feature.
Other feature winners include Jeffrey Bolen, of Lexington, S.C., in the Briggs Collision Legends Car Semi-Pro division; Hoyt Demis, of Archdale, N.C., in the Legends Car Masters feature; Clayton Weatherman, of Wentzville, Mo., in the Bandolero Bandits division; and Michael Van Wingerden, of Huntersville, N.C., in the Thunder Car race.
In the annual battle of "The Fast and the Furriest," Lug Nut, the world's fastest mascot, held off his seldom-seen girlfriend Lugette to win the annual mascot race. Driving equally prepared go-karts provided by Victory Lane Karting, Lug Nut took the lead after Rufus Lynx of the Charlotte Bobcats spun out driving into Turn 4 on the final lap.
The 16th annual Summer Shootout Series continues Tuesday night, July 28 with the return of wild-and-wacky school bus racing. Measuring 30 feet long, 112 inches tall and tipping the scales at nearly 13 tons each, these enormous racing machines will battle side-by-side and bumper-to-bumper on the tight quarter-mile oval.
In addition to the school bus race, a full slate of Legends Car and Bandolero action is scheduled. Spectator gates open at 5 p.m. with feature racing at 7:30 p.m.
Adult tickets are just $7 with children ages 6 to 12 admitted for $3 and kids under 6 are free. For more information contact the ticket office at 1-800-455-FANS or go online at www.lowesmotorspeedway.com.
