Courageous Father Risks Everything to Save People in Need

by Jeff Dennison

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Robert Byrd was in his home when he heard the sound of a car accident outside. He ran to the scene, pulled the victim away from the car and started CPR. He continued administering CPR until the medical personnel could arrive. This incident was not the last time Robert saved a life. While driving, Robert came across a car on fire and again he pulled the victim out of the car to save his life. Saving the man was so dangerous that his shoes actually melted in the process. Robert risked his own life to save the victim’s.

Mr. Byrd’s heroics did not stop there. Robert was extremely affected by the news reports about the devastating ethnic cleansing of the people of Kosovo by the Serbians during the 1990s. A couple of weeks after learning of the events happening in Kosovo, Robert was given the opportunity to take a law enforcement position in Kosovo. After retiring from 30 years of law enforcement service and receiving the Purple Heart in Vietnam, he decided to accept the position in Kosovo, as well as other war-torn countries around the world. Robert served in Kosovo, Iraq, Afghanistan, and East Timor, Indonesia. He took these positions knowing the danger he would be putting himself in.

Robert sacrificed many things in order to serve others, including time with his children. Even though their father was away a lot, they are very proud of him and things he has accomplished.

Robert Byrd will be honored as this week’s “Incredible Hero” at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, for helping others, even when it meant risking his own life.

The “Incredible Heroes” are extended an invite to attend the NASCAR Nationwide Series race as guests of CJM Racing and the America’s Incredible Pizza Company. Each hero receives a plaque in recognition of his or her heroism and spends a VIP day at the race track.

The Incredible Heroes campaign will run throughout the 2009 NASCAR Nationwide Series season. If you know of an “Incredible Hero” and would like to nominate him or her please email: heroes@incrediblepizza.com for consideration or check out www.incrediblepizza.com/contests/incredibleheroes.
