Whitwell Sweeps Barnett Tour Series at Central Arizona

CASA GRANDE, Az. -- Tucson’s RC Whitwell matched his 2006 accomplishment sweeping both days of the Central Arizona Barnett Tour Series event. Tour Series events invert the first days finish on the second day, handicapping the front runners to the back of the heat races. This put some front runners who experienced bad luck on the first day up front to start the five heat races. Former supernational champion, Darren Williams was a surprise no show on the second day. Christy Georges did not jump the start and won the first heat from the front row over 7th starting Stormy Scott. Pole starter, Johnny Scott won the second heat over seventh starting, Anthony Madrid. Dylon Kelfer won the third heat from the front row over 7th starting Terry Belcher, Jr. Robert King, Jr. and Daniel Hutto came out of the third row together for the transfers in the fourth heat and Mike Strobl won the fifth heat from the front row over 6th starting Jay Rosales.

Sherman Barnett and RC Whitwell won the two semi events. Jason Noll and Rick Ortega got the provisional starting spots. Georges led the first part of the race over Johnny Scott until the first caution when Scott had to pit with a loose coil wire. Strobl then passed Georges for the lead and Belcher, Jr., came up to third and was challenging Georges. Under caution on lap eight, Georges had to pit for a tire going down. After the restart Whitwell moved into second and began working on the leader, Strobl. Stormy Scott and Bumper Jones moved to third and fourth and a very good race took place with Whitwell taking the lead on lap 26 and holding on to the win over Strobl, Scott, Jones and Madrid rounding out the top 5. Noll took his provisional 25th starting spot and turned it into the GAT Hard Charger finishing sixth in the borrowed #33 David Rosales car. Rounding out the top ten were defending Tour Series Champion Scott Logston, Hutto, Georges (who actually passed Logston on the last lap but was penalized two positions for Texas Starting) and Brian Clark. Jones now has a 24 point lead in the tour series standings. Strobl, Logston, King, and Noll round out the top five. The next Tour Series event is the Texas, New Mexico swing July 27 & 28. The tour series is sponsored by Barnett Harley-Davidson, Barnett Auto Sales, MSD Ignitions, Flexi Flyer Motorsports, Marsh Racing Wheels, Premier Graphics and GAT Racing.
