Saturday, June 27, 2009 Birosh Fulfills Life Long Dream in Victory Lane
by Jen BrownWEEDSPORT, N.Y. -- It was an emotional night for Greg Birosh and his extended family at Canandaigua Speedway as the former speedway announcer made his way to Victory Lane Saturday night with a legion of fans emphatically cheering on the rookie driver in his first ever feature win!!
Sportsman Modifieds
From the word GO! Greg Birosh ricocheted around Canandaigua’s half-miler like a seasoned pro during Saturday night’s 25-lap Sportsman Modified feature as a legion of his fans looked on with heightened anticipation. Despite two cautions within the first ten circuits, Birosh continued to control the pace of the field as he held off the advances of Marcus Dinkins and Loren Lincoln with ease.
As Birosh screamed around the ring, Hilkert worked his way up the ranks to settle into third by lap ten as Eric Gugiere and Rob Bussey fought over top five positioning. Positions second thru fifth began to shuffle around as the circuits continued to fall but on lap 22, the #74 of Mike DeMaille brought the field to the restart line after a spin in turn 2.
Birosh would endure yet another caution minutes later setting up a heart stopping one lap shootout between Birosh and the trio of Bussey, Dinkins, and Hilkert who were all eager to spoil the rookie’s first win…
Fans were locked in on the #29 of Birosh as he led the field into the restart as one lap stood between Birosh and his dream… Exiting out of turn four the #76 of Bussey looked to have gained some ground on Birosh but not enough to take the checkered as the announcer turned Sportsman driver crossed the finish line 0.259 seconds ahead of Bussey! Top Five: Greg Birosh, Rob Bussey, Daryl Hilkert, Marcus Dinkins, and Eric Gugiere.
Big Block Modifieds
“Super Man” Matt Sheppard treated fans to an exhilarating run in Saturday night’s Big Block Modifieds feature as the Xtreme Lubricants sponsored #9s of Sheppard fought off a 16th place start to claim yet another feature win here at Canandaigua Speedway.
Within five laps of the DC Motorsports 35 lap feature Sheppard advanced an astounding 11 spots to break into the top five with Shannon Whaley aboard the #44 leading the 19 car field. As Whaley and Charlie Donk, currently running in second, separated themselves from the field Sheppard dispensed of Eldon Payne and Chad Homan to assume the number three spot.
By lap 14, the trio would spar for top positioning with Sheppard coming out on top as Donk and Whaley fell in line. Five circuits later, Gary Tomkins aboard the Rochester American #84 found his sweet spot on the high side cruising around both Donk and Whaley to now end up on the heels of Sheppard.
As the pair weaved in and out of traffic Tomkins began chopping down Sheppard’s lead with every lap’s completion. In the feature’s remaining five laps, Sheppard’s 1.289 second lead was cut in half by Tomkins as he appeared to only get faster in turns three and four. However, the current point’s leader Sheppard maintained his line around the half-miler cruising into to victory lane once more. Top Five: Matt Sheppard, Gary Tomkins, Steve Paine, Charlie Donk, and Chad Homan
Street Stocks
Bubba Burnell continued his good fortune at Canandaigua Speedway this year, capturing his third Street Stock victory Saturday night, despite the best attempts of Mike Rasbeck looking to find his first feature win this year.
Current National UMP Points leader Chris Fisher would lead the 14-car field into green flag racing but by the completion of lap 2, Fisher would loose his lead to Rasbeck in the #00r thanks to the inside groove. Rasbeck’s reign atop the field wouldn’t last for too long as Burnell’s #57b ride out dragged Rasbeck around turns one and two just two laps later.
From there, it was cruise control for Burnell as Rasbeck settled into second place with team mate and five time track champion Mike Welch worked from his eight place start to third by the completion of lap 7. Top Five: Bubba Burnell, Mike Rasbeck, Mike Welch, Andy Fisk, and Blane Smith
Pure Stox
Corey Hunt made his way to victory lane for the second time this season after holding off the advances of Marc Minutolo and Eric Chapman in Saturday night’s 12-lap Pure Stox feature. Top Five: Corey Hunt, Marc Minutolo, Eric Chapman, Ross Lurcock, and Alex Morris
