Saturday, July 7, 2012 Tyler Ends Winless Drought at Owosso
by Chris FobbeOVID, Mich. -- Hot temperatures made for great racing at the Owosso Speedway, as the travelling speed freaks of the Auto Value / Bumper to Bumper Super Sprints came to the Owosso Speedway for their first and only appearance of the 2012 campaign. In a special intermission event, the Speedway had Spectator Drags, in which race fans and even race drivers can take their personal vehicles onto the track to claim a $100 prize. In the end, ARCA Racing Series presented by Menard’s driver Erik Jones, fresh off of a third place finish at the Winchester Speedway would take the win over Shiawassee Shores Pure Stocks driver Pat Standley in a close race between Jones’s Trans Am and Standley’s Impala. The Auto Value / Bumper to Bumper Super Sprints would be first up on the track for their 30-lap feature event. Saginaw Valley State University student Kyle Flint would lead the field to Tony Postma’s green flag. Flint would charge away from the field in the early running, but a caution just past halfway would put Mike Astrauskas and multi-time Series Champion Bill Tyler right on Flint. On the restart, Tyler would make short work of Astrauskas, before going to work on Flint. The rich experience Tyler had would come in handy, as he worked past Flint on lap 19 to lead the 21 car field. At the line it would be Bill Tyler taking his first win in over seven seasons! Mike Ling, who took the win last week at the Dixie Motor Speedway finished second while sitting in for the injured Chad Blonde. Doug Stepke, Tanner Swanson and Steve Irwin rounded out the top five. Heat race wins would go to Tyler, Ling and 2010 Series Champion Kevin Feeney. Geoff Kaiser set the pace in qualifying with 13.030 around the 3/8s (.375) mile. The second race on the card would be the Affordable Tire and Service Center Pro Late Models, running 30-laps as well. Chief starter Jeremy Slayden would give Ryan Etchison and Scott Sigman the green flag first, as they paced the field to the line. It would be Etchison taking off in the early going. Jason Felver would quickly work his way past Sigman, and go to work on getting by Etchison. After several laps side by side, Felver would take command on lap nine. Etchison would make several attempts at getting back by Felver, but it was not to be, as the Owosso, Michigan pilot took his second win of the season. Etchison was second with Jimmy O. Smith, John Forsythe III and Tony Basalone rounding out the top five. Heat race wins went to Felver and Dave Bigos, while Leo Smith set the mark in qualifying with a 16.344. With his win, Felver now holds a one point advantage over Ryan Etchison and two points over Leo Smith in the season long points battle. The final feature of the evening would be the special 30-lap grind for the Shiawassee Shores Pure Stocks. Steve Pelky II would start things off on the pole, but it would be rookie Todd Binkley leading the next time around, but Pelky would be the lead the next time around. Pelky would lead a handful of laps more, before being overtaken by 2011 Dixie Motor Speedway Track Champion Chad Lamson. Lamson would pace the field before Lonnie Saumier, piloting Andrew Burton’s machine, would claim the lead just shy of halfway. Saumier would see Bob Elliott and Ron Hart get to his back bumper, but they would be unable to get by on the track. However, an issue in post race technical inspection would see Saumier being disqualified. Bob Elliott would inherit the win, his fourth of the season, with Ron Hart, Alex Hagon, Dan Gokee and Bob Robinson rounding out the top five. Heat race wins would be claimed by Dan Gokee, Pelky and Hart, while Elliott was quickest in qualifying with a 19.196. Next Saturday looks to be a great night of racing at the Big “O” as the Liskey’s Auto and Truck Service Modifieds make their return on Veterans Night, where we will honor past and present members of the armed forces. Also on the card will be the Chet’s Auto Service / Economy Print and Graphics Sportsmen, Shiawassee Shores Pure Stocks, Sport Stocks and it will be Mid-Season Championships for the Midwest Racing Scene Powder Puff Division. As always gates open at noon, qualifying is at 5pm with racing starting at 7pm. For more information, find us online at www.owossospeedway.com.
