Friday, June 22, 2012 Blackshear Extends Streak to Seven, Young and Withers Get First Wins of the Year
by Jay PeesCONNEAUT, Ohio -- Autograph night at Raceway 7 started out hot and sticky but by intermission the air was comfortable for the annual autograph session on the front straight. Bicycles were given away to two lucky children by the McDonald family. Zimmer Service Center also gave away 5 free pit passes for a parent and a child here at Raceway 7. The racing action was hot all night with Max Blair, Jack Young, Brandon Blackshear, Chris Withers, and Bud Sergeff getting the feature wins.
Two-time winner Chad Wright and Kyle Zimmerman led the Evergreen Lake Park Campground FASTRAK Late Models to the green with Wright leading the way over Zimmerman with point’s leader Billy Henry third. Yellow slowed the field at four laps in when A J Kingsley and Chris Peterson tangled in turn four with both spinning down the front stretch. Under the yellow Breyton Santee had a wheel come off the left front, ending his night. After another yellow flag at lap seven the order was Wright, Henry, Max Blair, Zimmerman, and Mike Mitchell. One lap after green, in turn one, Henry and Blair got together with Henry getting into the wall and Blair spinning completely around but never stopping. Yellow was thrown but since Blair never stopped he was given his position back with Henry, the reason for the yellow, going to the rear of the field. At lap 13 Blair and Wright were next to each other at the line with Blair holding the lead when they got to the back straight. Blair went on to his second win of the season over Wright with Zimmerman third, Matt Latta fourth, and Bruce Hordusky fifth.
Jack Young and Rick Pratschler led the 27 Zimmer Service Center E-Mods to Roger Osburn’s green flag with Young taking the immediate lead. After two quick yellows, Young and Russ Dunn were the leaders with John Boardman third. After a yellow at lap seven, defending champion Joel Watson, up from 12th at the start, was challenging for the lead when four cars tangled in turn three just one lap later. At halfway Young was extending his lead with Dunn now second over Watson. Two laps later a restart set up the worst crash of the night, involving nine cars when third-running Russ Dunn spun in front of the rest of the field. The green again flew at lap 13 with Young still in front. Young increased his lead over Gary Eicher and Rick Pratschler after green until Clint Brady spun with five laps remaining. Watson came to third on the restart and second two laps later. Young went on to his first Raceway 7 win of the season with Watson second, Eicher third, Brent Rhebergen fourth, and Rick Pratschler fifth.
The Economods had 14 year old rookie Casey Bowers leading the first lap then Brandon Blackshear taking over and going on to his seventh win of the seven features contested in 2012. Bowers, in only his third week at Raceway 7, held onto second over Eric Paulus for the first nine laps until a caution erased his advantage over third. On the restart Paulus used the high side to immediately get by for second. However, Paulus only made it to turn three before losing power, allowing Bowers to regain second. Jodi Woodworth came to third on lap 12 but was unable to catch the Cranesville, PA rookie. At the finish it was Blackshear, Bowers, Woodworth, Chuck Steinle Sr, and Alan Atkinson.
Ryan Blood and Tim Deutsch led the Street Stocks to the green flag in their 15-lap finale with Blood leading over Rush Firestone for the first lap. After restarting due to a lap one caution, point’s leader Paul Schreckengost spun in turn one for caution number two. Blood lead with Firestone and 2011 champion Chris Withers fighting for second. Withers won the battle at lap five and set sail for the lead. Withers and Blood got together on lap eight with Blood spinning.
Neither driver was deemed responsible, allowing Withers to retain the lead but Blood relegated to the rear for the caution. The next caution came at lap nine when Firestone spun unassisted from the second place. One lap after green, third-running Paul Schreckengost dropped his driveshaft and was hit hard by Rusty Wheeler, Shawn Fawcett, and Art Gilchrist. Defending champion Withers went on to the win over Tommy Fox, Steve Horvath, Art Edwards, and Art Gilchrist.
Ed Huge led the 14 Specialty Products Mini Stocks to the green with Huge leading the first laps with Bud Sergeff alongside by lap five. Caution flew with one lap remaining Chris Spencer spun into the wall on turn two, bringing yellow over the field and allowing Jonny Boyd to restart on the leader’s rear bumper. Sergeff went on to his fourth win of the season over point’s leader Boyd, who had come from last on the starting grid, Tim Gillette, Mitch Stokes, and Carlos Aponte.
