Wednesday, June 27, 2012 RoC Readies for Holland
 by Steve Petty
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- The Race of Champions Asphalt Modified Tour returns to the Holland Speedway this Saturday, June 30th for a 100 lap western, NY battle. This past weekend the RoC Tour was at the Dunn Tire Raceway Park and the racing was intense. This Saturday night certainly should be no different at the Holland Speedway. Qualifying heat races get underway at 6 p.m. Current point leader Daren Scherer from Binghamton, NY recorded his first tour victory back on June 8th at the Spencer Speedway in Rochester, NY. Scherer who drives the Binghamton Mets minor league baseball team entry holds a slim two point margin over two-time feature winner Kyle Ebersole from Hummelstown, PA. Since the inception of the Race of Champions Asphalt Modified Tour in 1994, the series has awarded a five point bonus to the winner of each qualifying heat race. The idea behind this was created by RoC Series Owner, Andrew Harpell. “We have always had a five point bonus to encourage hard heat racing to provide the race fans in attendance with the best possible show.” This year Scherer has been taking advantage of it. Scherer has swept his four heat race qualifiers with victories adding twenty points to his overall tally. Ebersole, despite his two feature wins, has been shut out of qualifying heat wins in 2012. The Race of Champions Asphalt Modified Tour does not handicap starting line ups, teams draw a starting pill upon entry to the speedway. For Ebersole they have not had the “luck of the draw” so far this season. Out of a possible 100 draw chips at each of the previous four events Ebersole has drawn chips above the number 90. Simply put, this means he has had to start last in every heat race this season. Despite this, the Hummelstown, PA driver has impressively worked his way through the heat race fields to find himself in a qualifying position along with a re-draw spot (the top 12 qualifiers out of heat races re-draw for feature starting position). Harpell commented on the trend between the top two drivers, “Daren has done a tremendous job to take advantage of the heat bonus points, we have had several overall championships decided by less than five points so the teams certainly understand the importance of those wins.” “This year with our new tires the heat racing has been fantastic at all of our events as teams are working hard to get in to a re-draw position.” “In the past few years teams were cruising and trying to save their tires in qualifying as they wore out so quickly. Kyle has been impressive coming from the back at every heat race this season to still solidify himself only two markers behind Daren in the points.” This Saturday the RoC Asphalt Modified Tour will make their return to the Holland Speedway for the first time in five years for a 100 lap event. All the cars and stars of the series will be on hand for this big return. Bonus lap money has been posted for all of the 100 laps in the race as well as the RoC 100 lap purse format. Race fans can save $2 off general admission by presenting a ticket stub from any participating Race of Champions Tour event speedway. Joining the Modifieds will be the Holland Late Models, Chargers and Hornets. Racing gets underway at 6 p.m. with the RoC Modified 100 scheduled to take the green at 8:15 p.m. For additional information please phone the RoC offices at 607-775-5555 or the Holland Speedway offices at 716-418-RACE (7223).
