HAMPTON, Va. -- Travis Miller put the finishing touch on his championship-winning season by scoring his fourth Top Dog victory as Arena Racing USA's Coca-Cola Racing Series closed out its 2005-06 campaign on Saturday night at Hampton Coliseum.

Jack Parsons drew the pole for the start of the 50-lap event, sharing the front row with rookie Cameron Williams. Derek Miller, the other championship contender coming into the night, started third with Matt Midgett alongside. Travis Miller lined up next-to-last on the 13-car grid.

The initial green flag had just been displayed when trouble broke out. Patrick Morgan, starting sixth, smacked the Turn 2 wall and rolled over, collecting Shag Hartman. The incident eliminated Morgan from the race.

Back under way, Parsons grabbed the lead into Turn 1 and left the inside lane open for Derek Miller, who bypassed Williams off Turn 2 and brought Midgett, Kerry Gilbert and Scott Prillaman along with him. Travis Miller, meanwhile, was riding along in the ninth spot.

On lap 10, Prillaman motored past Midgett to gain the third position. As Gilbert tried to follow, he and Midgett made contact and Gilbert dropped back in line.

The second caution flag waved on lap 14 when Williams and Travis Fortune tangled in Turn 2, collecting both Parsons and Derek Miller. During the ensuing caution period, officials ruled that the yellow flag was for Williams and Fortune and Parsons and Derek Miller were returned to first and second for the restart.

The field went back under green, but only for a short spell as Williams dropped off the pace in the middle of the backstretch. As the cars slowed, the scoreboard still registered 13 completed laps.

For all practical purposes, the battle for the championship came to an end on the next restart as Derek Miller slowed with mechanical problems off Turn 2. Drivers scrambled to avoid his crippled machine, setting off a massive pileup at the end of the backstretch.

Including Derek Miller, seven of the remaining 11 drivers were ensnared. Also involved were Hartman, Fortune, Stephen Kirby, Prillaman, Midgett and Robbie Davis, who got the worst of the deal. He was transported to the hospital as a precautionary measure.

After a lengthy delay as rescue personnel tended to Davis and officials and track workers cleared the scene, five drivers were left to decide the race - Parsons, Prillaman, Gilbert, Simmons and Travis Miller, who clinched his second series title (and became the first two-time Arena Racing USA champ) when his brother fell by the wayside.

The fifth and final caution flag flew on lap 16 when Gilbert, under pressure from Simmons, rolled in Turn 4. His car was uprighted and he was able to continue.

Back under green, Travis Miller went after Simmons for third, taking the position on lap 19. He quickly closed in on Prillaman and, in tandem, they tracked down Parsons.

On lap 32, Travis Miller made a bid for the runner-up spot, driving to the inside of Prillaman off Turn 4. Prillaman, however, pinched him down to the track apron and forced him to drop back.

On lap 43, Travis Miller was back at it, motoring under Prillaman in Turn 2 and clearing him off Turn 4 on lap 44.

With Prillaman on his heels, Travis Miller rapidly narrowed the gap between himself and Parsons, setting up a potential replay of Friday night's wild finish.

Travis Miller went after the lead on lap 48, pulling under Parsons in Turn 4. Parsons refused the yield the position, though, and the two were side-by-side as the white flag waved.

In Turns 3 and 4 for the final time, Prillaman reentered the picture, rolling up on Travis Miller and using a "bump draft" to propel Miller ahead of Parsons.

At the line, Travis Miller was the winner, while Prillaman edged Parsons for second. Simmons was fourth and Gilbert rounded out the top five.

While Travis Miller was declared the series champ on Saturday night and Derek Miller was lauded as the runner-up, the remainder of the final point standings await official verification and will be released as soon as that process is completed.

Taking another step on the way to the 2005-06 title, Travis Miller collected his 10th feature win of the season in the 50-lap "A" Main. Nine of his victories have come in "A" Mains.

Bobby Dean was the scheduled pole-sitter for the event, but pulled into the infield before the start, ceding the pole to Kerry Gilbert.

As the race got under way, Gilbert grabbed the lead. Following in his tire tracks were Miller, Jack Parsons and Bill Dailey. By lap 5, Gilbert, Miller and Parsons had pulled away from Dailey by better than half a straightaway.

The first caution flag came out on lap 5 when Michelle Pearl, Randy Sample, Larry Murphy and Jordan Wood piled up in Turn 2. Of the four, only Wood was relegated to the infield. Lining up for the restart, Gilbert, Miller, Parsons and Dailey held down the top four positions. Derek Miller, who started last, was up to fifth.

Back under green, Derek Miller drove under Dailey in a bid for fourth. He cleared Dailey on lap 6.

The second yellow flag flew on lap 12 as Pearl's car rolled in Turn 4, just ahead of the leaders, who all dodged the accident scene.

Back under way, Gilbert and Travis Miller remained locked in a nose-to-tail tussle for the top spot, while Derek Miller hounded Parsons for third, taking the spot on lap 15.

Travis Miller pushed his car to the front on lap 18, driving to the inside of Gilbert off Turn 2. Within two circuits, he had opened a four-length lead as Derek Miller closed in on Gilbert.

As Travis Miller continued to stretch his lead, Derek Miller ducked under and past Gilbert on lap 29 to gain the runner-up spot. Parsons and Scott Prillaman tagged along with Miller, kicking Gilbert back to fifth. Prillaman scooted by Parsons for third on lap 39.

Travis Miller's lead stood at almost half a lap when the third and final caution flag appeared. Had the yellow come out within the last 10 laps, the lapped cars would have been deployed to the rear of the field. As it was, Travis Miller enjoyed a two-car buffer between himself and his younger brother.

On the final restart, Travis Miller roared off to a half-straightaway margin as Derek Miller struggled to pass Travis Wall's lapped machine.

Derek Miller finally cleared Wall on lap 46. By then, though, Travis Miller was on cruise control and on his way to Victory Lane.

At the finish, Travis Miller was the winner by 1.985 seconds over Derek Miller. Prillaman was third to the stripe, followed by Parsons and Gilbert. Bill Dailey was sixth to earn a spot in the Top Dog race. Due to mechanical problems, however, he was absent from grid when the cars rolled out for the finale.

Starting near the tail of the field, Matt Midgett moved out front on lap 45 and sped on to his fifth feature victory.

Ken Simmons drew the pole and took the lead in Turn 4 on lap 1. Shag Hartman and Cristy Spencer were left in a door-to-door battle for second, followed by another wheel-to-wheel tussle between Lee Banks and Patrick Morgan.

The first yellow flag waved on lap 5 when Hartman and Spencer tangled in Turn 4, dumping Hartman on his roof and sending Spencer into the outside wall. Lining up for the restart, Simmons, Banks, Morgan, Dane Wood and Midgett made up the top five.

Back under green, Simmons jumped out to a five-length lead. Midgett, meanwhile, quickly disposed of Wood and Morgan to take over the third spot. By lap 12, Simmons had extended his advantage to a straightaway as Midgett closed in on runner-up Banks.

On lap 14, Midgett poked a fender alongside Banks. For most of the next 22 circuits, the two were locked in a side-by-side duel for second.

Working lap 36, Banks finally cleared Midgett to reclaim command of second place. Four laps later, however, he spun out of Turn 2 to bring out the second and final caution flag, handing second to Midgett.

Gathering for the restart, Simmons continued in the lead, followed by Midgett, Francis Jarrelle, Hartman and Morgan.

As the race resumed, Simmons and Midgett took off bumper-to-bumper. On lap 43, Midgett took a look to the inside of Simmons on the backstretch, but the leader fought him off.

Simmons, however, couldn't hold Midgett at bay on lap 45 as Midgett ducked low off Turn 4 and darted ahead through Turns 1 and 2.

By the finish, Midgett's winning margin had swelled to 1.785 seconds over Simmons. Hartman was third, holding off Morgan at the end. The top four drivers all advanced to the evening's Top Dog finale. Wood was fifth to the stripe.

Travis Fortune notched his fifth feature win of the season in the caution-filled, 50-lap "C" Main, taking the lead on the next-to-last circuit.

Roger Miller started on the pole, but gave way to his front-row colleague, Rob Wells, on the opening circuit. On lap 2, Robbie Davis nosed ahead of Wells to take over the top spot. Wells settled into second, followed by John Price, Fortune and John Farrer.

The first yellow flag appeared on lap 6 when Farrer skated loose off Turn 4 and two-wheeled into the inside wall.

On the restart, Davis leaped out to a half-straightaway lead over Wells. As third-place Fortune pressured Wells for second, Davis stretched his advantage to a full straightaway.

Fortune poked a fender alongside Wells on lap 10. Racing side-by-side, the two made contact in Turn 2 on lap 11 and Wells squirted ahead.

On lap 14, Cameron Williams ducked under Price in a bid for fourth. Heading down the backstretch, the two tangled to bring out the second caution flag. Price was sidelined by the incident.

Lining up for the restart, leader Davis was separated from second-place Wells by two lapped cars. He took full advantage of the situation, quickly opening a half-straightaway margin. The lead soon grew to a full straightaway as Wells struggled with the slower cars.

The third caution flag waved on lap 18 as Bob Strickland's machine executed a lazy roll onto its right side in Turn 4.

On the ensuing restart, Farrer's car went over off the fourth corner and the yellow flag immediately reappeared. Wells was caught up in the accident and retired to the infield.

One more circuit was completed before the fifth caution flag flew for debris on the track. At that point, officials began scoring the caution laps.

Back under green at lap 21, Davis managed a slim lead over Fortune, the new second-place runner. Third-place Stephen Kirby was half a straightaway back.

On lap 27, Strickland and Williams locked horns on the backstretch and Williams' car flipped, prompting the sixth caution flag. Gathering for the restart, Davis, Fortune and Kirby headed the parade.

As the race resumed, Davis and Fortune bolted from the pack. Meanwhile, Strickland moved up to challenge Kirby for third.

The seventh and final yellow flag was unfurled on lap 37 when Strickland suddenly pulled to a halt on the backstretch.

On the last restart, Davis and Fortune broke away in nose-to-tail formation. By lap 44, Davis had opened a three-length lead. Fortune, however, quickly regained that lost ground and began searching for an opportunity to take the lead.

That opportunity came on lap 49 as Fortune powered to the high side of Davis on the backstretch.

At the finish, Fortune was the winner by 1.089 seconds over Davis. Kirby was third to the line, while Williams finished fourth and qualified for his first Top Dog race. Craig Rayfield completed the top five.

Derek Miller, Randy Sample and Jordan Wood posted victories in the three 25-lap qualifying heat races.
