Wall Becomes Fourth Different Top Dog Winner

HAMPTON, Va. -- Continuing an early-season theme of unpredictability, Travis Wall moved out front on the 47th circuit and showed the way to his first win in the 50-lap Top Dog race, the featured event of Saturday evening's Arena Racing Hampton Roads program at the Hampton Coliseum. Through four events, this season's 16 races have produced 13 different winners, including four different Top Dog victors.

Chris Raiford drew the pole for the start, sharing the front row with Wall. Robbie Davis and rookie Josh Ayer made up Row 2, while Charlie Green and Matt Leach occupied Row 3.

Trouble broke out early as Cory Millard, the ninth-place starter, got dumped on her roof as the field was coming to the initial green flag. The caution flag quickly waved and a complete restart was ordered.

Finally under way, Raiford pulled into the lead, while Wall settled into second. Only one lap was in the books when the second caution flag flew as Matt Leach and Derek Miller tangled in Turn 4. The incident resulted in a lengthy red-flag delay for repairs to the Turn 4 wall.

On the double-file restart, Raiford easily cleared Wall, leaving the inside lane open for Davis, who took over second place and dropped wall to third. Deeper in the field, drivers scrambled for position with defending series champ Adam Florian emerging from the jumble in fourth place.

On lap 8, Davis pushed his machine to the front for the first time. Wall followed Davis' cue and swiped second from Raiford on lap 9, bringing Florian along with him.

The top three -- Davis, Wall and Florian -- circled the track in tight formation until lap 38 when Davis' car skated wide in Turn 4. Wall took a look to the leader's inside, but was eventually forced back in line.

Wall wasn't through, though. On lap 44, Wall slipped a fender to the inside of Davis in Turn 4, launching a door-to-door battle as Florian enjoyed a front-row seat.
On lap 47, Wall edged into the lead. A lap later, the race's third caution flag waved as Nelson Moody and Raiford tangled off the fourth corner.

On the restart, Wall quickly cleared Davis and left a four-wide joust in his wake. On the tight, tenth-mile oval, four-wide didn't work at all and the fourth, and final, caution flag flew when Davis and Florian got squeezed into the outside wall in Turn 1.

As the field gathered for a "green-white-checkered" sprint, only six of the 14 starters remained on the track. Wall was the leader, followed by Green, Prillaman, Florian, Raiford and Spencer Saunders. The attrition list included Moody, Millard, Matt Leach, Brittany Bangas, Ayer, Miller, Aaron Leach and Davis.

Under green for the last time, Wall eased ahead of Green and left the lane open for Prillaman, who scooted into second.

At the stripe, Wall was the winner by two lengths over Prillaman. Green was third to the stripe, while Florian and Raiford completed the top five. Saunders was sixth as all of the six remaining drivers completed the entire distance. Aaron Leach was credited seventh, followed by Davis, Moody and Miller.

Spencer Saunders started on the pole and motored to his second win of the season in the 50-lap A Main, leading wire-to-wire.

Derek Miller lined up third on the grid and moved into second place on lap 2, slipping ahead of outside pole-sitter Patrick Morgan.

The only caution flag flew on lap 3 when Brad Hancock overturned in a pack of cars off Turn 4. His machine was quickly uprighted and he was able to continue. Jordan Wood wasn't as fortunate, though, as he pulled aside with mechanical issues.

Back under green, Saunders gained a narrow edge over Miller. They were joined by Morgan, Scott Prillaman and Landon Florian as the top five runners bolted from the pack. Behind them, Adam Florian scooted past Michael Weddell for the sixth spot -- the final Top Dog transfer position.

Adam Florian overtook his brother for fifth on lap 7 and brought Robbie Davis along with him, dropping Landon Florian to seventh.

On lap 20, Morgan and Prillaman tangled in Turn 4, briefly collecting Adam Florian. The yellow flag remained hidden, though, as all three drivers pulled off with Florian picking up the third spot. The incident allowed Saunders and Miller to pad their lead to a full straightaway over Florian. On lap 23, Morgan exited the event, pulling his damaged car into the infield.

By lap 30, Saunders had put about three-quarters of a straightaway between himself and Miller. Meanwhile, Adam Florian was gaining on the second-place driver.

On lap 38, Saunders headed into heavy traffic, up by a straightaway over Miller, who had his hands full with Florian. Florian grabbed the second spot on lap 44 and quickly set off after Saunders, who was mired in a gaggle of lapped cars.

By the finish, Florian had halved Saunders' lead, trailing him at the checkers by half a straightaway. Miller was third to the line, holding off Prillaman down the stretch. Charlie Green was fifth, while Davis was sixth and joined the top five in moving on to the Top Dog feature.

Matt Leach grabbed the lead on lap 9 and held on for his first win in a caution-filled B Main, which was extended from 50 to 51 laps to accommodate a "green-white-checkered" finish.

Clayton Parrish drew the pole for the start of the event, but gave way to Leach on the opening circuit. Parrish battled back to lead lap 2, then cleared Leach on lap 5. Leach wasn't done, though, driving to the leader's outside on lap 8 and completing the pass on lap 9. Two laps later, Chris Raiford overtook Parrish for second place.

The yellow flags began flying with increasing frequency on lap 15 for a variety of spins and tangles. In all, the race was slowed by eight caution flags. The most spectacular of the incidents came on lap 19 and left Anthony Perez with a unique perspective on things as he was momentarily perched directly atop Aaron Leach's machine in the middle of Turns 3 and 4.

All the while, Matt Leach and Raiford held down the top two spots. Raiford's best chance at taking the lead may have come on a restart at lap 44 when he slipped underneath the leader off Turn 2. Before that battle could develop further, however, another caution flag appeared and Leach was positioned out front for the restart.

Matt Leach was clinging to a slim edge over Raiford as the white flag went in the air. Before the leaders could return for the checkered flag, though, one last caution flag waved, setting up a two-lap sprint to the finish.

Under green for the last time, Matt Leach eked out a narrow margin over Raiford and drove on to a one-length win. Raiford was second, followed by Travis Wall and Aaron Leach. Those four drivers all moved on to the Top Dog finale. Chris Crecelius was fifth to the line.

Rookie contender Josh Ayer led all the way from the pole, fending off a late challenge from Nelson Moody, and posted his first victory of the season in the 50-lap C Main.
Ayer shared the front row with Mike Conley and got the drop on his front-row partner as the field roared through Turns 1 and 2 for the first time. Cory Millard moved up to second place, followed by Craig Carlton. Conley drifted back to fourth, while Brittany Bangas emerged in fifth.
After a caution flag at lap 7, Ayer opened a slim margin over Millard, who was occupied with a challenge from Carlton. Carlton grabbed the second spot on lap 13. Bangas also slipped past Millard for third, while Ayer extended his lead to nearly a full straightaway.
Three more caution flags interrupted the proceedings on laps 19, 20 and 24. At that point, officials began scoring the caution laps.

The complexion of the event took a turn on lap 33 when Carlton and Bangas locked horns off the fourth corner, bringing out the fifth yellow flag. As Carlton pulled into the infield and Bangas retreated to the rear of the field, Moody assumed the runner-up spot.

Back under green, Moody shadowed Ayer until lap 44 when he ducked to the inside of the leader at the entrance to Turn 1. The two went door-to-door for a handful of circuits with Ayer maintaining a slight advantage each time they returned to the flagstand.

Ayer and Moody were still side-by-side when the final yellow flag flew on lap 48. Bangas had rebounded to third place, followed by Millard and Mike Dayton.

On the final restart, Ayer quickly fashioned a one-length gap over Moody and held that margin to the checkers. Moody was second, while Bangas and Millard were third and fourth. The top four finishers all advanced to the Top Dog feature. Dayton rounded out the top five.

For the third time in four events, Adam Florian paced the afternoon qualifying session, lapping the tenth-mile layout in 8.138 seconds. Jordan Wood was second-quickest, only 38-thousandths of a second behind Florian. Brad Hancock, Robbie Davis and Scott Prillaman completed the top five.

Thirty-three drivers took part in the very competitive time trial session. The separation between Florian and the 33rd-fastest qualifier, Curt Curtis, was 1.077 seconds. Barely half a second separated the top 30 drivers.
