Thursday, June 25, 2009 ASA Late Model Series Set for Inaugural 'Cheerwine Cherry Bomb 200' at 'The Rock'

LEXINGTON, Mich. -- The ASA Late Model Series is gearing up for what is surely one of their biggest races so far in 2009, the "Cheerwine Cherry Bomb 200" at Rockingham Speedway.
When you think of "The Rock" you remember names like, Pearson, Waltrip, Allison, Yarborough and Petty. Gone are the days of NASCAR and their stars, but new owner Andy Hillenburg is trying to keep the dream alive and help create new names to be a part of the Rockingham history.
On July 3rd and 4th for the first time in a long time, straight rail, offset late models will race at "The Rock". Over 30 of the best late model drivers will compete in the first, of what we hope is many, "Cheerwine Cherry Bomb 200"s".
"This will be a true test for our drivers; you have so much going on all at the same time, speed, the draft and the track itself. Rockingham is hard on tires but Hoosier has developed an awesome tire that will hold up for 50-60 laps, it"s almost too good" stated Series President Ron Varney.
"I expect this to be a highly competitive field of cars; we have current NASCAR Nationwide drivers Stephen Leicht and Scott Lagasse along with former NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Rookie of the Year Willie Allen already signed up. Plus current ASA Late Model Series stars Drew Brannon, Brian Blum and Brandon Johnson.
Also on tap for the race weekend are the Frank Kimmel Street Stock Series, schedule for 100 laps. Tickets for the Cherry Bomb 200 are available at the speedway ticket office.
