Madden Holy Smokey: Southern Rankings Break-Away

by Steve Hixson

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- With an entrance to Crossville (TN) Raceway USA, Tuesday night Chris Smokey Madden removed all doubt that he’s slowing up his 2009 racing campaign. In just four (4) days the Gray Court, South Carolina based racer increased his lead over Casey Roberts by 170-points. At the beginning of Ray Cook’s SOUTHERN-NATIONALS tour it was all Roberts, then just like a changing of the guards, it was all Madden, who tallied two (2) WINS, a runner-up and a fourth place nod. Piloting his # 44 “Century Plastics, Cushman Paint & Body, Freeman Plumbing Co., Extreme Customs & Cycles” sponsored Bloomquist / Clements Racing Engines powered mount, Madden topped a pair of $3,500. to win mid-week shows in Tennessee before wrapping up the weekend with a pair of Top 5’s in the N.E. portion of the state Friday and Saturday. Randy THE DREAM Weaver was able to eek out a 3rd place run in Alabama Saturday as he chases the O’SAS crown, but it barely made a dent to Roberts, who commands a 85-points over the 3rd ranked Southern racer.

Congrats are well in order for ROCKETBOY Tommy Kerr, whom all by his lonesome, GUNNEDOWN Team Zero, Friday at the Gap. The 4T “Blount Excavating, Explosive Specialists, Turner Industrial Supply, Stowers CAT” sponsored Rocket collected five (5) Top 5 finishes on the two-week tour and leads the THUNDER series group heading into a busy August. Boaz, Alabama’s Tim Busha debuts the Southern RANKINGS big time with a Saturday night victory at his home track in Talladega. The $5,000. win, already places him higher (currently tied for 27th) in the standings than last season as he was ranked as the 44th best racer in the South in 2008. Other than Busha, young Austin Dillon, heir to the Childress Racing fortune, makes his debut in the Southern RANKINGS with his 3rd place nod at Fort Payne last a week ago Monday. This weekend Madden could easily take win # 9 as Cherokee Motor Speedway hosts a $4,000 to-WIN SAS-E event, although everyone in the Top 5 in the Southern RANKINGS has had positive success at THE PLACE YOUR MAMA WARNED YOU ABOUT.
