 by Steve Hixson
CLEVELAND, Tenn. -- With cold weather forecasted for this Thanksgiving Weekend the Cleveland (TN) Speedway chose to move-up the start time for this Saturday's (Nov. 28th) Grant Adcox Memorial race. The tracks owner/promoter Monty Morrow put together an amazing November to Remember 2009 season closing schedule when he was forced to rescheduled the $4,000 to-win / 40 lap, Southern Regional Racing series event back in October. Now expected to draw an even larger number of Super Late Model racers, Cleveland Speedway is paying a $1,000 bonus to the high points finisher from the last 3-weeks of competition. Racers from Georgia, Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi, North & South Carolina, Alabama, and from as far off as Illinois and Pennsylvania have been converging on the South Eastern Tennessee facility for the past two (2) weeks and more are expected this weekend.
Adcox, was a native from Chattanooga, made it to the NASCAR big leagues before his untimely death at the Atlanta Motor Speedway on November 19th, 1989, during the 'Atlanta Journal 500' event. With sponsorship from Chattanooga’s corporate Krystal Restaurants, Adcox took a top 5 at the Winston 500 in Talladega, Alabama, which was his career best NASCAR finish. Now-a-days the ARCA sportsmanship award, (H.G. ADCOX AWARD) is named in Adcox's honor and is awarded annually by his father Herb, whom owns a Chevrolet dealership in Chattanooga. A full regular racing program in all divisions; LLM/Crate, A & B Hobby, Pony and FWD's are on the undercard along with the special S.R.R.S. race. Special group qualifying is the normal format for the series that locks in a pre-determined number of fast qualifiers from their times. Middle Tennessee’s Jay Brinkley holds the 2009 series championship chase lead, over Alabama’s Josh Putnam and Mississippi’s Anthony Burroughs.
Scott Sexton of Pigeon Forge, TN took the checkers in the revamped format in 2004 and since one racer has repeated as winner since the venue has changed to Cleveland, TN. Dale McDowell took the event victories in 2007/08 and has recently re-acquainted himself with the Cleveland Speedways victory lane, winning the Turkey Rumble just two weeks ago. Past/modern era winners include; Illinois racer Randy Korte, area North Carolina ace Shawn Chastain. Racers estimated at having a better than average shot at taking the $1,000. bonus include Skip Arp of Georgetown who'se construed a 2nd & 3rd place finish in the past two races. Catdaddy Clint Smith who'se obtained a 3rd & 7th place finish. Also Dale McDowell & Chris Madden each have a victory within the past two races while Tarheel TIGER Ray Cook has a single runner-up finish to his credit.
For the final race of 2009, Pit gates will open at 11AM EST and the grandstands at one hour later officially. Drivers Meeting is slated for 1:30PM, with Hot Lap Practice scheduled to begin shortly after. Admission for the Grandstands is $15, with Pit Passes costing $30.
