Thursday, September 1, 2011 Sprints Cars and Asphalt Stars Invade Bear Ridge Speedway Saturday
 by April May Preston
BRADFORD, Vt. -- Bear Ridge Speedway kicks off “Super September” on Saturday as Dead River Oil Company welcomes the WYKR Sprint Cars of New England (SCoNE) to the quarter-mile clay oval in Bradford, VT. A host of asphalt stock car drivers will also compete in a special Sportsman Modified event.
The winged, methanol burning SCoNE warriors will battle at Bear Ridge Speedway for the fifth time this season, and as many as 20 or more teams will attempt to knock Chris Donnelly off the top of the mountain. Donnelly, of Piermont, NH, has three victories and a runner-up finish in the four SCoNE events held at Bear Ridge in 2011, and leads the series championship with nine of eleven races complete. Dan Douville of Bridgewater, NH trails Donnelly by just six points, though, and is the only other SCoNE driver to win at Bear Ridge this summer.
The Sprint Cars of New England race is the middle round of the second annual SCoNE Triple Crown Weekend, which kicks off on Friday, Sept. 2 at Canaan (NH) Dirt Speedway and concludes on Sunday, Sept. 4 at Legion Speedway in Rumney, NH. The three-race mini-series is separate from regular-season SCoNE points and will crown its own champion. Douville swept all three races in last year’s inaugural Triple Crown.
A special “Asphalt Invitational” race has been announced for Saturday that will bring in a handful of the most talented asphalt short track drivers in the region for a dirt-track showdown. Williston, VT driver Brian Hoar, who is on the verge of winning a record eighth American-Canadian Tour Late Model championship, will make his dirt racing debut behind the wheel of a Bond Auto Parts DIRTcar Sportsman Modified on Saturday. Hoar won at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, NH in August and will square off against fellow dirt rookies John Donahue, Nick Sweet, Chip Grenier, Wayne Helliwell, Jr., and 2011 Thunder Road Int’l Speedbowl “King of the Road” Dave Pembroke.
A fundraiser will be held on Saturday to assist long-time Bear Ridge Speedway official Penny Davis, who lost her home in Woodstock, VT due to flood damage from Hurricane Irene.
In addition to WYKR Sprint Cars and the “Asphalt Invitational”, regular events will be held Saturday on Dead River Oil Company Night for the Bond Auto Parts DIRTcar Sportsman Modifieds, Wells River Chevrolet Sportsman Coupes, A Notch Above Automotive Limited Late Models, Weglarz Property Service Fast Fours, KDD NAPA Auto Parts Hornets, and the Hornet Queens. General admission is $10.00 for adults (age 17-61), $8.00 for teens (12-16) and seniors (62+), and $2.00 for kids. Racing action begins at 6:00pm.
Bear Ridge Speedway is located on Kidder Road in Bradford, VT. For more information including rules and entry blanks for the Enduro 75 (Sept. 10), Demolition Derby (Sept. 17), or the New England Dirt Track Championships (Sept. 24), visit www.bearridgespeedway.com or call (802) 222-4052.
