Vermont Lt. Gov. Scott Headlines SCoNE Guest Driver Series

by Mark McKeon

CHESTER, Vt. -- Vermont Lieutenant Governor Phil Scott will lead a select group of Guest Drivers by racing with the Sprint Cars of New England later this season. Drivers from around the region are expected to participate in the SCoNE Guest Driver Program this summer at Canaan Dirt Speedway in Canaan, NH; Bear Ridge Speedway in Bradford, VT and Legion Speedway in Wentworth, NH.

Far from a rent-a-ride dilettante, Lt. Gov. Scott is a three-time Track Champion at the ultra-competitive Thunder Road Speedbowl in Barre, VT, where his 27 Late Model victories top the All Time Win List. He’s also a two-time winner of the People’s United Bank Milk Bowl and was the 2002 American Canadian Tour (ACT) Champion.

Scott’s duties as Lt. Governor no longer permit him to compete on the full ACT tour, but remains a weekly competitor at Thunder Road, where’s he’s currently second in points. He’s also contending for this year’s Vermont State Late Model Championship, a four race series split between Thunder Road and the Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Fair Haven. He’ll race as a Guest Driver in a SCoNE Sprint Car at Bear Ridge on Saturday, September 22, during the season ending New England Dirt Track Championship.

“The Late Models on asphalt will always be my first love,” says Scott, “but I appreciate the opportunity to try my hand on dirt in a SCoNE Sprint car. I’ve been a race fan all my life and you can’t be a race fan without being thrilled by watching Sprint cars race side-by-side, broadsiding on the dirt. I’m especially grateful because this means I’ll be able to race this year at all three Vermont tracks- Thunder Road, Devil’s Bowl and Bear Ridge.”

The SCoNE Guest Driver Program gets underway this weekend, June 24 at Legion Speedway in Wentworth, NH when Karl Frederickson of Freemont, NH, Publisher of Dick Berggren’s Speedway Illustrated makes his Sprint Car debut. A former regular with the Valenti Modified Racing Series, Fredrickson has competed on dirt at the IMCA Super Nationals in Boone, IA- which draws more than 800 IMCA Modifieds- and with the USAC DMA Midgets at Bear Ridge.

Donnie Lashua of Canaan, NH will take the helm of the SCoNE guest car on Tuesday July 3 at Canaan Dirt Speedway. Although he’s spent the last several seasons racing either Late Models or
a Pro Stocks on pavement, Lashua’s resume also includes a Late Model dirt track championship, earned at Canaan in 1996.

Three-time NEMA Midget Champion Randy Cabral of Plymouth, MA will drive the SCoNE guest car later this season. Former NASCAR Whelan Modified Champion and USAC Pavement Sprint Car Champion Bobby Santos III of Franklin, MA and Noblesville, IN and former Whip City Speedway Mini Sprint Rookie of the Year and ABC/ESPN Broadcaster Jack Arute of Westfield, MA have both expressed interest in racing the SCoNE Guest Car, contingent on schedule availability.
