Truck Series Points Leader Bobby Buttrey to Run ASA Series Challenge 200

by Rob Spires

NASHVILLE -- Bobby Buttrey has been tough to beat at the Fairgrounds Speedway this year, winning an impressive six times in 11 Supertruck starts. However, Buttrey is trading his trusty Supertruck for a Late Model in hopes of continuing his 2009 success in this weekend’s ASA Late Model Series Challenge 200.

Buttrey will be driving one of the cars formerly campaigned by his uncle, 2004 and 2005 Late Model track champion, Wade Buttrey. He already has one start in the car this year, finishing 14th on July 18. “We used that race as a test session,” Buttrey said. “We wanted to make sure everything was going to stay together on the car. We made some changes and we should be pretty good this weekend.”

This weekend’s race will be the Fairview, Tenn. driver’s first attempt at running in the ASA series, and he said he understands that it will be different from the Supertruck races he’s used to. “The ASA guys are tough,” he said. “There is lots of great competition. We just hope we have something for them.”

Of course, Buttrey does have the advantage of racing at the Fairgrounds Speedway each week. “Being so familiar with the track will definitely play into our favor,” Buttrey said. “We know how it reacts to the weather, what it does when it gets hot; things like that,” he added.

Buttrey isn’t the only driver familiar with the Fairgrounds Speedway to be competing in Sunday’s race, however. Willie Allen, 2007 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Rookie of the Year and current track record holder, is also entered. Keeton Hanks, Chuck Tuck, Dillon Oliver and Tommy Joe Martins have also filed entries. Martins will be going for the double as he is also competing in the Toyota Tundra 200 Camping World Truck at the Nashville Superspeedway on Saturday.

Also scheduled to compete is “Fast” Eddie Hoffman, three time winner and current ASA track record holder at the Fairgrounds Speedway.

Realizing the caliber of talent lined up to compete in Sunday’s race, Buttrey said he wanted to be realistic with his goals. “We want to make the race first,” he said. “Then we want to learn as much as we can and finish in one piece. A top 10 or 15 would be great,” he added.

Buttrey said that he will still be racing to earn money for the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, as he is every week in the Supertruck series. “We’ll be doing the same thing we always do. Carl Black Chevrolet will donate 98 cents for each lap we complete and $500 for each win,” he said. “I really love being able to raise money for the kids.”

In addition to Carl Black Chevrolet, Buttrey said that all of his Supertruck sponsors are on board to help with this weekend’s race. “I’d really like to thank Big Machine Records, Carl Black, WSIX, and Pain in the Art Productions. Without them we couldn’t do it,” he said. “I’d also like to thank everybody at Scott Borchetta Racing. They’re the ones that make it happen,” he added.

Saturday will be a practice day for the ASA teams, and then the spectator gates will open at noon on Sunday with qualifying beginning at 1 p.m. The green flag will drop on the 200-lap ASA race at 2:30, and the 50-lap United States Super Truck race will begin immediately after. Tickets are $15 for 12 year old and up, $5 for children 6-11 years, and free for kids 5-under. A $5 off ticket price coupon can be found on the Fairgrounds Speedway’s official blog at http://fairgroundsspeedway.blogspot.com or at www.fairgroundsspeedwaynashville.com
