Southwest Championships at CSP this Weekend

PEORIA, Ariz. --Arizona’s Canyon Speedway kicks off a busy late-season stretch of racing action with this weekend’s Third Annual Southwest Championships atop the 1/3-mile clay oval this Friday and Saturday.
The Third Annual Southwest Championships will feature two full nights of wingless ASCS Canyon Region Sprint Car action, ASCS2 Micro Sprint Cars and Southwest Mod Lites. Some big money is on the line as well for the ASCS2 Micro Sprint Car ranks with a $5,000 winner’s share posted for Saturday night.
While both nights of racing action will go green at 7:00 p.m., an open practice session will precede on Wednesday night from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
This weekend’s event kicks off five consecutive weekends of stellar events at CSP with following events including the 12th Annual USAC Hall of Fame Classic with USAC National Sprint Cars on October 26-27, the 24th Annual Desert Classic on November 2-3 followed by the Stock Car Shootout on November 4, The Western Classic on November 9-10 with USAC National Midgets and then the 45th Annual Western World Championships on November 15-17 with both winged and wingless Sprint Cars.
Charles Davis, Jr., carries the hot ASCS Canyon Region hand into this weekend’s Southwest Championships after winning three of seven previous series events at CSP, including the most recent pair of features. Davis, Jr., has also topped three recent CSP Challenge Cup Sprint Car features atop the 1/3-mile oval.
“Chargin’” Charles Davis, Jr., of Buckeye, AZ, also sits atop ASCS Canyon points with a 37-point advantage over Phoenix shoe R.J. Johnson. Las Cruces’ Rick Ziehl, Phoenix’ Bruce St. James and Peoria’s Dalten Gabbard round out the current top five in points.
Getting dialed in for this weekend’s $5,000-to-win ASCS2 Micro Sprint Car tilt, Joshua Shipley broke into victory lane for the first time this year at CSP in the most recent outing on October 6. Josh Castro and Adam Milsap have both claimed a pair of CSP wins with other victors including Gerrett Guilkey, Dustin Cormany and Ryan Walter.
Tony Martin picked off a best-in-class fourth Southwest Mod Lite win on October 6.
Tickets for this weekend’s racing action at CSP are $15 on both Friday and Saturday, with a $2 discount for Military, Seniors and Students. Children ages 7-12 are $6, with children 6 and under admitted free. VIP passes are available for $20.
