Logue in Right Place, Right Time for IMCA Modified Win

BOONE, Iowa -- Sometimes the lead isn’t the place to be late in a race.

Veteran John Logue of Boone found that to be true Saturday night as he took advantage of contact between the top two cars and drove past both and to the victory in the IMCA Modified feature race Saturday night at Boone Speedway with a crowd of more than 1,200 fans watching.

Also Saturday night, Jeremy Embrey of Granger won for the second straight week in the IMCA Northern SportMods feature, Donavon Smith of Lake City won his second IMCA Stock Car main, Scott Lograsso of Nevada and Chris Hupp of Boone won the two IMCA Hobby Stock features, and Dusty Masolini won for the third straight week in the Dwarf Car feature.

Logue, who moved through the field into third behind J.J. Scott (Dallas Center) and Adam Larson (Ames), took advantage when those two cars made contact after a pass for the lead, drove around both and led at the start/finish line when a caution flew. He stayed there over the final laps to win his third Boone feature of the season.

Logue echoed what other feature winners also expressed in victory lane.

“The bottom (of the racing surface) was where you had to be to pass,” Logue said. “Earlier, when the field was still bunched up and a little slower, you could pass in the middle and up on top, but to win you had to be on the bottom.”

Scott led much of the way before Larson, seeking his third straight win, passed him on the low side, relegating Scott to the runner-up spot. A lap later, Scott also tried the bottom, but his attempt at getting under Larson to regain the lead resulted in the two cars making contact in turn four. As they slowed momentarily, Logue drove past both. Larson finished second, Scott third, Boone’s Scott Baker fourth and Earlham’s Josh Gilman fifth.

Meanwhile, Embrey won the SportMod feature for the fifth time at Boone this year, and second week in a row. Iowa State University student Geoff Olson, a native of Sioux City now living in Ames, finished second, followed by Scott Davis (Boone), Joel Bushore (Boone) and Kyle Brown (Kellogg).

Smith won for the second time this year at Boone, first since the second week of the season, in the IMCA Stock Car feature. He won over Bryan Trogdon (Bouton), Chris Webb (McCallsburg), Trent Smith (Jefferson) and newcomer Rick Speck (Garwin).

Scott Lograsso won his second IMCA Hobby Stock feature, as he took the first 12-lap event over Beau Kaplan (Ankeny) and Michael Murphy (Jefferson), while Boone’s Chris Hupp won the second event, his first feature win of the season, crossing ahead of Devin Smith (Lake City) and Dylan Book (Adel) after Book led the first 11 laps, but dropped to third after a restart following a late-race caution.

Masolini won for the third straight week in the Dwarf Car feature race. He finished ahead of Jeff Stensland (Nevada), Mike Kennedy (Boone), Andy Hennigar (Ankeny) and Ed Zehm (Ames).

Saturday night’s program at Boone will be followed by a big fireworks display. Also on tap Saturday will be a rollover contest. Gates open at 5 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $15 for adults and $5 for those 12-and-under. Racing Rascals will be admitted for $2, but must have their membership card in hand when tickets are purchased. A limited number of free kids admission tickets will also be available beginning Tuesday at the Kum & Go near Boone Speedway. Racing action begins at 7:30 p.m.
